recently, i've been trying to make my way out of the apple ecosystem. im on the verge of deleting my apple account, but cant find a way to use airtags wo an apple account. i think that may be the only constraint.

ive logged out of my iphone and all apps i need are already loaded & are still working properly.

no issues on my macbook either since use terminal for most things. i cant remember using the app store at all on the macbook.

anyone have tips, tricks, notes? please and ty!

Same here.

Unfortunately, you can’t use AirTags or any Apple services without an Apple account so you may want to hold off on deleting your account.

Unlike Android/Google, the Apple stock apps will work just fine, it’s the backup part (iCloud) that won’t. If you haven’t already, you need to decide if you want to backup your data and how.

I stopped using iCloud and de-Googled during the pandemic (I’ve had crossing time zones and syncing issues before). So I won’t be hysterically crying like I did the past two times because iSync, then iCloud deleted rmy contacts, calendars, notes, photos, etc.

Whilst I still use Apple stock apps, I hurriedly replaced them with the Proton ecosystem and still depend on my EHD. However, many people advise against putting all of your eggs in the same basket. I also use Disroot, Standard Notes and Ente just to name a few.

It seems like you’re doing very well and ahead of the de-Apple game. I also did not download any apps on my MBP but there’s a few on our house computer (iMac); I only log in to update apps and the OS. Good luck!

According to my research, using AirTags without iOS isn’t realistically feasible. They’re hard-locked to an Apple ID during setup, and registration requires an iPhone or iPad. The Find My network is end-to-end encrypted and closed, so even if you captured the Bluetooth broadcasts (which rotate frequently), you wouldn’t be able to resolve them to a location without an Apple device relaying those data. There’s no current jailbreak or firmware hack that bypasses this, and while researchers have reverse engineered parts of the protocol, it hasn’t led to any usable method for Android or other platforms to fully integrate with or control AirTags.
