Original Title: TIL that in 1970 British Rail submitted a patent for a flying saucer designed to be an interplanetary vehicle powered by nuclear fusion. It was originally proposed as a lifting platform and by the time the patent was filed it had been revised to become a large passenger craft for space travel.
