I'm neither into vans nor vanlife, but I have owned cars both old and new, good and bad. I'm thinking that if you're struggling financially, whichever van you can afford will most likely be a money drain due to endless repairs needed. Sure, it might look half-decent and with room enough to sleep, but chances are the frame is cracked or similar. Cheap cars are cheap for a reason.
Also, a car is rarely well insulated, so depending on which climate you call home there can be some cold nights.
Have you considered a small travel trailer (like a teardrop or something under 16ft) - they're usually wayyy cheaper than vans to buy outright, don't need mechanical work like an old van would, and you could probably find a decent used one for 3-5k that would give you privacy without breaking the bank.
