Sweet wrap tho

[–] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 22 points 1 month ago (1 children)

My mate keeps complaining about not being able to afford a house mortgage, but keeps buying a new car every two years. I've been thinking of broaching him on it.

[–] LilB0kChoy@midwest.social 17 points 1 month ago

This is my brother-in-law. He complains about his partner and how she doesn't save like him (he makes more than her) and how they/he can't afford a house but he spent $20,000 on camera equipment last year (it's a hobby, not a job for him), has bought and sold 3 motorcycles since I've known him (progressively more expensive), and puts a lot of money into his other hobbies.

The housing market (at least in the US) is shit and everything's overpriced right now but at some point your own choices need to be considered.

[–] don@lemm.ee 20 points 1 month ago

Yeah, but you’re poor in style.

[–] Damage@feddit.it 13 points 1 month ago

What's life if you can't have a little fun?

[–] sirico@feddit.uk 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Why did we stop using Louvers?

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Because they were invented before computer simulations of airflow. It turns out they do exactly the opposite of what people thought and actually pull the car upwards instead of pushing it down.

[–] RickyRigatoni@retrolemmy.com 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

What if I just want to look cool and have some sun shade for my rear window

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Nothing wrong with that, you just can’t have that and a fast racecar.

[–] RickyRigatoni@retrolemmy.com 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I just remembered I drive a honda so I'm not getting a fast racecar no matter what I do

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 15 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Sounds like you haven’t added enough vtec decals yet.

[–] TrenchcoatFullofBats@belfry.rip 8 points 1 month ago

Type R(egret)

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 month ago

Did we really need computer simulations? Can’t you use like smoke and a leaf blower?

[–] grue@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

I thought they were for preventing people from being able to see into the hatchback area without having to cut the cargo capacity in half with a parcel shelf.

[–] y0kai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 month ago (4 children)

lol these are only like 30k new.

If that was a financial mistake, perhaps the plate should stay "STILLPOOR".

This, I should mention, is coming from someone who has never had $30k in his life and drives an older model of one of these cars (which i fucking love, btw).

[–] avg@lemmy.zip 34 points 1 month ago (3 children)

It's not that the car is relatively affordable that has made him poor, it's the mods. I've seen people spend multiple times the MSRP of a car in mods alone, which is a poor decision to do with this car because it's entire purpose was to be an affordable sports car.

[–] vodka@feddit.org 12 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Couldn't be me.

Totally not waiting for a ~4000eur parts delivery for this exact same model of car tomorrow.

[–] P00ptart@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

My Miata says hi.

[–] Lommy@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Cool, i love the anticipation for new parts. 4k in parts, i'm guessing turbo kit?

[–] vodka@feddit.org 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Nah, I want it to stay completely legal (turbo conversions would either be illegal or cost tens of thousands to get TUV approved here) It's just a bunch of NA mods, headers, new exhaust, flywheel, all that

[–] Lommy@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That's awesome! Ah, the TUV. Fortunantly we don't have that here yet. I hope you recieved everything in good order today and wish you a lot of fun installing and driving!

[–] vodka@feddit.org 1 points 1 month ago

They arrived in time, and fitted perfectly! Now to wait for Fensport to do some remote tuning :)

[–] y0kai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 month ago

I managed to get mine on height adjustable coil-overs and aftermarket wheels without breaking the bank, but yeah, I've seen some folks that do pour money into engines and cosmetics. Fair point lol

[–] Eat_Your_Paisley@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

While I'm sure there are people modding cars thinking they'll get their money back most of us understand that it's not a good financial decision

I had about $3500 in parts waiting for me to take delivery of my Alltrack

[–] aislopmukbang@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Under 25 trying to insure a wrapped coupe might have something to do with it

[–] y0kai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 month ago

ah yeah, age is a factor.

When I got mine, I was switching from a corolla and was expecting a hefty insurance hike, but it only went up by $5 a month lol

[–] blargh513@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Also, this was the original which was sold by the now-dead Scion brand. This could be as old as a 2012 model. I suppose at that age, throwing money at it could be well described as a financial mistake.

[–] y0kai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I own a 2013 FR-S.

Unless this is rebadged, idt they were sold under the Toyota brand in the US until I think 2016. I could be wrong, of course, but this looks newer.

Regardless, outside of whatever mods they've got, mine is as old as they get and has no problems at all (other than the damn door checks lol), so age alone isn't a reason to throw money at it.

[–] TheRealKuni@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I am so thankful for the FR-S. I have a 2015 Scion tC, and when the FR-S dropped Scion updated the design language of the gen 2 tC (2011-2013) to the gen 2.5 (2014-2016) to copy some of the language of the FR-S, and it looks SO MUCH BETTER.

(Such a fun little car. Not as much fun as the FR-S, I’m sure, but a 2-door Corolla with a Camry/RAV-4 engine and a six-speed manual transmission is a blast, let me tell you.)

[–] y0kai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

tCs are super cool too! I looked at a couple when I was shopping around, but I wanted rear wheel drive.

[–] TheRealKuni@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I didn’t even know how to drive stick when I bought it, so I didn’t want to have to learn both stick and RWD. Especially not with the ice and snow we get here in Michigan. 😅

[–] y0kai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 month ago

lol yeah, there's no ice or snow here, that would have definitely been a deciding factor for me as well

[–] TrenchcoatFullofBats@belfry.rip 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Didn't they also have the thinner Prius wheels? I seem to recall that this made then much easier to drift/break the back loose.

[–] TheRealKuni@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Honestly I don’t know. But I do know it was pretty understeer prone when stock, so I’m not sure.

[–] BootLoop@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago

At that age? That's still a newish car. Newer than anything I've owned. I drive a 30 something year old car and never had any car troubles.

[–] Psythik@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

"Only 30k"!?

You're fucking joking, right? Twenty years ago a $30,000 car was expensive and unobtainable for me, and it still is today. I can only dream of owning a car that expensive. My budget has never been above $10K, and that's why I drive a 350Z.

[–] y0kai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 month ago

So you're poor like me and the guy in the pic.

That's not a new car, and I doubt he bought it new. Probably cost what your 350Z did.

[–] rabber@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Could have bought a Porsche instead of those dumb mods

[–] fibojoly@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Taking oneself ever so seriously with a Porsche or being absolutely fabulous in a modded Toyota. Tough choice.

[–] rabber@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago

I've always wanted a 2008 Porsche Cayman, is that too much to ask like jeez

[–] Akasazh@feddit.nl 5 points 1 month ago

The dumbness in on purpose

[–] RadioFreeArabia@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Isn't this the FT86? It shouldn't break anyone's bank.

[–] Kaliax@lemmy.sdf.org 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Toyota GR86. Started as the FRS, and Subaru produces their BRZ model. Last year I almost bought one new and iirc it was about $33k in my market (before taxes/registration/dealer fees).

[–] RadioFreeArabia@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

It has different names in different markets. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_86

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 4 points 1 month ago

A $500 shitbox would put me in debt rn... 😩
