Probably whoever was writing this in plain text didn't know about the superscript numbers in unicode ³.

Somehow I've seen it written as cum multiple times in my line of, and never registered it haha

Wasn't there a satellite that got lost in space due to EU/US teams disagreeing on the tracking units of measurement? I feel like I read this at some point...

Assuming you're thinking of the Mars Climate Orbiter, it crashed into Mars.

Of course it's possible there's been more than one metric/imperial issue.
