Entirely dependent on the tone set by the individual PD in my opinion. This is a massive amount of people and it’s one thing to have a block or two of protesters that the police can instigate or beat the crap out of and arrest as they see fit vs a crowd of 20k (or whatever) that could wreak havoc on an entire city. It’s absolutely self-interest on their part, but also what they think they can or can’t get away with. I don’t think potential National Guard involvement even factors into their thought processes.

I mentioned something about this phenomenon a few days ago. Basically, the entire point of "check and balances" is to deadlock powerful governmental branches, individuals, and parties against one another. Once those with power (Seattle PD in this case) find themselves at risk of losing it to someone else, they change tact to maintain the status quo.

What? You mean actually change your behaviour in ways that you might find inconvenient instead of just loudly demanding that society change itself for your benefit? Talk like that is liable to make someone post that comic panel with the guy in the well. You don't want that, do you?
