Report: “not even a fucking microblog”

This is honestly the first time I’ve seen a screenshot of Lemmy posted here. While technically not a blog, it does federate with blogs, so unless I’m told otherwise…

[–] Revan343@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago

Should remove it and tell them to take the screenshot from a Mastodon interface instead of a Lemmy one :P

Still 20k absolutely deranged crazy people who need to be on a list

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 14 points 1 month ago

They are on a list. We're watching.

[–] taiyang@lemmy.world 40 points 1 month ago (1 children)

As far as I know, both numbers aren't confirmed. We're hearing 2k to 20k at Trump's birthday party, and anywhere from 5m to 11m on protests. They're still trying to tally and I only saw a 2m temporary number. That said, with Boston having like 1m apparently, it'll probably be pretty big (they combined pride parade with it so it's a like unclear how you'd count that)

A more fun way to look at it is, the army parade had most of it's route at 1 row of viewers. That's... really really bad attendance. Lol

the army parade had most of it’s route at 1 row of viewers.

That's really sad. The small town of a few thousand I live in manages better attendance to it's annual parade made up of tractors and classic cars and fire trucks, and one year even included the snow plows!

If we can get a good thousand people (nearly a quarter of the town's population) to attend a Saturday parade on a budget of whoever actually shows up, the president of the United Fucking States should be capable of getting Macy's day parade sized spectacle at least

[–] taiyang@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

That was my thought, too. I attended a small town parade once in Solvang, CA, mostly by accident and even that had at least two rows of people. Granted, thunderstorms probably contributed but like you said, Macy's Day parade is often huge and that's sometimes bone chillingly cold so it's not a great excuse lol

Where the hell did that 11M number come from?

[–] Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world 33 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Somehow that number started to spread on social media, but no proper news outlet is reporting that.

That said, the major cities all had crowds that dwarfed Trump’s General Aladeen themed birthday party.

[–] pivot_root@lemmy.world 31 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

no proper news outlet is reporting that.

And they probably won't. The best we'll get is watered-down slop or misreporting that frames the movement as small and unimportant.

It's not in the interests of corporate media to accurately report on protests against the Trump administration. It might make some ad money in the short term, but it's antithetical to the goals of both the owners and the corporations to piss off Trump:

  1. Republicans benefit the wealthy and corporations and they don't bite the hand that feeds.
  2. The Trump administration has proven itself happy to retaliate against reporters and news agencies by banning them from press events.
  3. The billionaires who own them don't want to anger the guy they're buying favors from.

Edit:

The AP certainly didn't choose to publish many photos that show off the actual scale of the protests: https://apnews.com/photo-gallery/no-kings-protest-trump-us-b5de52994b7c592034fb19b7d3e9d577

This is what they should be showing: https://i.imgur.com/vR41TqH.mp4

It’s probably made up. But I can see it as probable.

[–] Glytch@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

I first saw it from the Alt National Parks Service Facebook account.

Do you have a source of the numbers and not just the post where there's also no source?

Edit: just a heads up, OP of the screenshoted post corrected from 500K to 50K so your screenshot now wrong and potentially spreading misinformation!

[–] barkingspiders 3 points 1 month ago

Here's a source that says 5-6mil at the protests and links to the spreadsheet people are using to try and tally it https://www.gelliottmorris.com/p/no-kings-day-protests-turn-out-millions

[–] aramis87@fedia.io 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I thought most people weren't protesting in DC?

[–] 474D@lemmy.world 12 points 1 month ago

They weren't protesting at the parade, the no kings protest was huge there
