How is this not bigger news?

FWIW I just logged on and the first thing I saw was this story on German TV (edit: twice).

And if anybody has doubts about the political motivation:

Officials said they located the suspect's vehicle, which had lights and sirens as if it were a police squad car, and found a "manifesto" inside with the names of other lawmakers and officials.

edit: the politician killed was pro gun control

It's also the #1 story on nbcnews.com, #4 on abcnews.com (after the Israel-Iran conflict, millions protesting nationwide and Trump's birthday parade), #1 on cnn.com, #1, #2, #3 and #4 on nytimes.com.

I mean, why do people say bullshit like "why is this not a bigger story" on something that's one of the biggest stories being covered by national news?

It's hyperbole for sure, but OP was one of the first to post this when the linked article was hardly more than a note.

(The answer is it just broke and there are a lot of newsworthy things happening today)

It was an almost inevitable succession to robbers cosplaying as ICE. If one is deemed normal, then extrajudicial killings where in the moment you believe it's illegal to defend yourself will be normalized too. If this is allowed to stand, or your president would pardon this kind of violence, your country is lost.

We're having a Kim Jong-Un style military parade today, dude. America let Trump grab it by the pussy.

I'll be out there today in solidarity with your democracy. The people are the last bastion of resistance to fascism.

I appreciate the sentiment, but you'd be acting more wisely by working simultaneously to oppose the rise of fascism in your own country.

Show solidarity, sure, but use your rallies to build coalitions to allow you to organize against the budding problems with Trump-style politicians in Canada. It was only by the disgrace of Trump's overreach that you didn't wind up with a PM that was much like him.

In my country in Europe, the news didn't even give any context as to why it happened. They said that the robbers disguised themselves as police officers, and they didn't even mention ICE and the fact that the current administration allows this force to arrest people without a warrant and without wearing a badge proving that they are indeed police. Hell, they can even walk around with their faces covered, for God's sake.

I'm really surprised that a case of impostors like this is only being reported now, so late. There have probably been many other situations, but they went unnoticed by the media.

American living in Germany here. I'm shocked how often everyone is asking me about why there are "riots" in LA and they know nothing about the ICE raids and lack of due process for ommigrants.

My only reasoning is news organizations are doing this on purpose but I can't understand why

[–] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago

Obviously, yes. Those topics were touched on at the local rally.

[–] fluxion@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

There have also been reports of men claiming to be ICE in order to SA women. They roll up on a woman, claim to be ICE, and demand that she come with him. And since ICE refuses to use IDs or a uniform, the women have no way of knowing if the dude is actually ICE.

Seeing the headline, for a minute I had hoped that the resistance had finally woken up, but no- just another victory for the Nazis. Not sure why I expected any different.

The country is in the midst of a “second American Revolution” that will be bloodless “if the left allows it to be.”

Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts (Project 2025) https://www.politico.com/news/2024/07/04/leader-of-the-pro-trump-project-2025-suggests-there-will-be-a-new-american-revolution-00166583

[–] Chivera@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago

The people will finally have enough and begin retaliating. This is exactly what Trump wants to take control of the country.

[–] HK65@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Nah, the resistance actively went and buried its head in the sand. They cancelled all the No Kings protests in Minnesota in response to this. WTF

There were still a whole bunch of people who showed up, at least some of the politicians who were supposed to speak at the capitol understandably cancelled though.

Fucking psychos... i hate the right so much. Dangerous deranged cunts.

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 16 points 1 month ago

Assassination. Terrorism.

That’s what trump and his sycophants would call it. That’s what the news would report them saying. But if a democrat gets shot it’s “political violence.”

[–] BrianTheeBiscuiteer@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I expect a very cryptic "condemnation" of this act from the GOP any day now.

[–] Lasherz12@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

Coupled with a longer statement about how Democrats have views that for some people necessitate their murders and so we need to ratchet down the murders but also the rhetoric about Trans people being humans, etc.

[–] fluxion@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

"Such horrific violence will not be tolerated in the United States of America."

"...well... Let me get back to you on that one actually"
