doomers are not against preventing climate change. We just accept where it actually is currently and where its likely to be based on past actions of all the various groups. Politicians, corporations, typical joes, etc. I always hate this picture of doomers like they have given up. Not saying some have not but plenty of us will fight to the last but we are also going to enjoy the best time of our life going forward that each day is.
Climate - truthful information about climate, related activism and politics.
Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.
As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades:
How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world:
Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:
Anti-science, inactivism, and unsupported conspiracy theories are not ok here.
It's a bit hard not to be a doomer when one tries to be realistic. Pretty much nothing so far has proven that the people in power give a shit about preventing the worst case. And until people realize it and actually rise up en masse, it won't change. And that's mostly down to chance, I think, for example of a devastating enough event to happen for people to go "oh shit".
Both the acid rain problem and the hole in the Ozone layer were things humanity dealt with through the correct regulations. Both are non-issues at the moment. The hole is even healing.
We can and will do so again.
Thinking it won't change is a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Both were simple problems with simple solutions, and they also weren't politicized. Climate change is maybe the hardest problem humanity has had to face so far, and it asks us to go directly against the economy we have set up here on earth. We require degrowth to truly stop climate change. Our economy demands the exact opposite.
Acid rain and ozone layer holes didn't require systemic change. Stopping climate change demands it.
That's not to say it won't happen. I'd absolutely love to see it happen. But it needs something more drastic than just positive thinking and individual changes in behaviour. It needs a borderline revolution.
Doomers by definition have given up.
If the problems we currently have were avoidable in their eyes, they wouldn't be considered doom in the first place.
doom
doo͞m
noun
Inevitable destruction or ruin.
Um by your definition I guess. Many folk fight to the last or rage against the machine. Unlike with a battle the environment is going to be a slow demise and it can be better or worse. Doomers recognize that. And better is better than worse. My hope is that eveyone wakes up and does everything possible to make the inveitable happen as slowly and as less severly as possible. To me doomers are folks that expected the type of summer in the northern hemisphere that we just got out of and are expecting the kind of summers and winters to come. I don't know when I will see a snowless winter where I am at but I will not be surprised if it was as early as this coming one but I would be surprised if I did not see it within then years.
