Fuck it, that was a quality answer.

[–] b_tr3e@feddit.org 48 points 2 months ago

But not a quality audience.

I would have silently gone in my head ABCDEFGHIJKL and then said "MNOPQRSTUVWXYZ", but I suppose I could have said "MABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ", or should I say "MABCDEFGHIJKLOPQRSTUVWXYZ"?

Come to think of it, why do our letters have a standard order, and if they have to, why that one? A better order, off the top of my head, is OUEIAPKGHXBDPTMNLWYVZSFRCQJ

You left out an 'N.' I'm gonna have to escort you out of the comment section.

[–] Jax@sh.itjust.works 13 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Clearly they're drunk, get 'em outta here

[–] toynbee@lemmy.world 16 points 2 months ago (1 children)

If drunk people aren't allowed on Lemmy, we're collectively gonna have a problem.

Because some Phoenician jerk picked it arbitrarily about ten thousand years or so ago and it stuck.

[–] Grimpen@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 months ago

Basically. 99 Percent Invisible did a podcast on this very topic: Episode 468 Alphabetical Order

[–] toynbee@lemmy.world 10 points 2 months ago

But your version doesn't match Twinkle Twinkle Little Star as well.

[–] Tagger@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I strongly believe we should teach the alphabet as qwertyu iopa sdfgh jkl zxc vb n and m

[–] DarkSirrush@lemmy.ca 7 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Why not Dvorak? I have been told its way more efficient typing, though also completely incomprehensible.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Because then it would start with .

[–] Klear@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Because what you were told were mostly lies.

[–] thespcicifcocean@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

It's not more efficient, but it does feel better on the hands, in my opinion.

[–] KSPAtlas@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 month ago

The reason the alphabetical order is like that is because it was passed down all the way from the 14th century BC and potentially before, so a lot of sound changes and mild order changes happened (like Z going from the letter after E to the last letter) and you have the modern English alphabetical order

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 4 points 2 months ago

Maybe Seedy He Effed G, Hate I JK Ellen Mellow Pee

[–] Artyom@lemm.ee 1 points 2 months ago

Look 'm in the eye and say M A C A B. It's not about repeating the alphabet, it's about asserting dominance.

[–] Atelopus-zeteki@fedia.io 41 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Should he have said, "Mthe alphabet"?

[–] blandfordforever@lemm.ee 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Funny but no casino would stop a drunk guy from losing money at the table

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 29 points 2 months ago

It's a high bar; he might have been poor and making the rich people uncomfortable.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 15 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The fuck? You'd think a casino would let the drunk dude keep losing money.

[–] Piemanding@sh.itjust.works 16 points 2 months ago

Probably a liability or legal issue if they're too drunk.

[–] frenchfryenjoyer@lemmings.world 9 points 2 months ago

Can see myself doing this while not drunk lmfao

[–] umbraroze@piefed.social 8 points 2 months ago

Alphabet starting with M? Hey, prescriptivist dingdongs, you can't just say there is now apparently an alphabet that starts with M! Those things don't exist in vacuum - if you make something like this up, you have to go all the way and define such an alphabet clearly!

Rules mean nothing unless they clarify established language use conventions! Which is why I think descriptivist approach is better in most cases.

[–] Anomalocaris@lemm.ee 5 points 1 month ago

for the lazy:

mnopqrstuvwxyz

[–] xia@lemmy.sdf.org 5 points 2 months ago

Fine: "the alphabet starting with emm"
