It only took 4 months for Trump to send the military against US citizens.

This one is going to be tough to defend in court when it gets there

[–] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 28 points 1 month ago

This isn't going to get decided in a court.

This ends in death, not court. I don't say that to encourage violence but no one in this administration is going to allow a court out judge to stop them.

My respect for most soldiers is not high to begin with, but anyone that falls in line and illegally invades California is a terrorist. It's illegal to follow an illegal order.

So peacefully protesting the current administration is a rebellion, but storming the fucking capitol to stop an election is an act of heroism, eh?

[–] LaunchesKayaks@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago

Going to a peaceful, permitted, protest next weekend and I totally expect cops to show up. Especially because we are protesting against the president himself lmao.

Once you get troops on the streets, it’s only a matter of time before it goes bad. Some kid throws a stone, next minute there’s houses on fire and people getting killed.

There's a chapter of Nights Watch, by Terry Pratchett, that I wish was mandatory for every cop and soldier. There was a bit about "restoring the peace by any means" that shock me.

Most of us that swore the oath actually meant it, and understand precisely why the Posse Comitatus Act was created. The trouble arises when shitbag civilian leaders get it onto their heads that because we have the most powerful military ever, it can be used to solve any problem. Most of the vets I know are full on liberal and respect the “leave me alone and I leave you alone” mindset, but some are also supporters of the ones who claim to be strong even if it’s all clearly false bravado. Things are going to get very messy if one officer gives orders to fire and another countermands it.

GNU Sir Terry

About to finish Discworld for the third time and Nights Watch may be the best of all 41 books.

“You took an oath to uphold the law and defend the citizens without fear or favor," said Vimes. "And to protect the innocent. That's all they put in. Maybe they thought those were the important things. Nothing in there about orders, even from me. You're an officer of the law, not a soldier of the government.”

I think I had the awful luck of reading Mort and Nights Watch before any other series book, and they are by far my favorites to this day. Still many to read, and many I greatly enjoyed, but those two are something else for me.

Love the Watch but all the books involving the witches are great as well

I would suggest to storm the Capitol, as that is clearly permitted. Even when you are violent against cops you will get pardoned if convicted at all.

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 19 points 1 month ago

Well, that’s illegal.

In addition, the Secretary of Defense may employ any other members of the regular Armed Forces as necessary to augment and support the protection of Federal functions and property in any number determined appropriate in his discretion.

This fucking clown thinks people are gonna lay down for him, lol. The reality is that he’s setting into motion a confluence of events that will leave a critical mass of people with nothing left to lose and no alternative but to overthrow him.

The reality is that he’s setting into motion a confluence of events that will leave a critical mass of people with nothing left to lose and no alternative but to overthrow him.

The reality is he's setting the stage to enact martial law and end democracy in the United States. He's hoping for it. Escalate conflict with the public and as soon as they get violent it's the perfect rationalization for deploying federal forces en masse.

It’s mostly posturing. The last thing he wants is a Kent State situation to collapse his already waning domestic support, particularly while rattling the saber at multiple other countries and waging a tariff war.

[–] Mirshe@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

I don't honestly think he's thinking that far ahead. I don't even know if he can. You forget, Trump truly believes his own shit. Every word that comes out of him, he believes it. When he goes around and says he's the most popular president in the history of ever, he believes that.

We have a malignant narcissist running the country, not a rational actor in any form.

Buy guns and learn how to use them.

If you have friends or family in the military and law enforcement, make sure they understand they are going to be ordered to point guns at their neighbors, and that they are allowed to refuse those orders.

They've been waiting their whole lives to go warrior-cop against a hostile populace, who are you kidding?
