A sad day :/

.ee came out of the blue, was highly involved in postings and comments and then they disappear :(

I'm out of the loop ... I'm on .ee bcs I thought they defederated the last (I use my own filters).

What did they do?

Oh, nvm:

We’re really sorry to say this, but lemm.ee will be shutting down on June 30, 2025.

The key reason is that we just don’t have enough people on the admin team to keep the place running. Most of the admin team has stepped down, mostly due to burnout, and finding replacements hasn’t worked out.

The sad reality is that while there are a lot of great people on Lemmy, there are also some who use the platform to attack others, stir up conflict, or actively try to undermine the project. Admins are volunteers who deal with the latter group on a constant basis, this takes a mental toll. Please understand why our admins chose to step down, and be kind to the admins on whatever instance you decide to join.

We know this sucks. We’re genuinely sorry it’s ending like this. Thank you to everyone who spent time here and helped make it better.

Yeah I was surprised by this this morning when I logged into my .ee account. But I get it. Burnout is no fun and moderating/administrating can be a thankless position that eats into your time.

They couldn't replace the ones that left over the months. And sudden migration of reddit refugees from the ban purges recently dint help

Lemmy.zip is pretty good, and is not too quick to de-federate.

[–] Evil_Shrubbery@lemm.ee 2 points 2 months ago

Oh, I have a .zip account already, I think I started using .ee over it coz I didn't see some instances (lol, but it wasn't the nazi stuff).

I'll re-check it out, thx!

I think mander.xyz is a great instance if you need a new one.

picture of skip and the regular show cast with like, mordecai labelled .ee and like a bunch of shit instances we've defederated from, and skip is labeled pawb.social (or whenever cool instance you're on (not lemmy.world))

[–] Ledericas@lemm.ee 1 points 1 month ago

not enough admins to save the instance, eventhough its a large instance.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago (2 children)

When an instance shuts down, does its contributed content get removed from instances it already federated to?

[–] fxomt@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Only the images will be broken. All the comments and posts will stay

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Well, at least that's something. Thank you.

If you know an instance is getting shut down in advance, you can delete your own posts before it gets shut down. Most platforms will send out a delete request to other instances. There is no guarantee that they will honor it, but most do.
