the Internet is yet to recognize New Zealand

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Well, might as well start here. Do you recognize it?

[–] kittenzrulz123@lemmy.blahaj.zone 13 points 2 months ago (1 children)

But we finally have data on Western Sahara

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

And many dozens cheered

[–] peoplebeproblems@midwest.social 59 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Wait wait wait wait. I know I've been surprised by this map numerous times.

BUT RUSSIA RECOGNIZES IT?

Also looking at this map, it seems the majority of the population of Earth recognizes it.

So in my head, that means that Palestine is 100% a nation. With sovereignty. And the US, Europe, and Australia are still "lalala i can't hear you" and "can't be a genocide if you aren't a targeted group of people that we recognize lalalalala."

[–] khorovodoved@lemm.ee 16 points 2 months ago

BUT RUSSIA RECOGNIZES IT?

Soviet Union was one of the major (if not the major) advocates for Palestine in UN. Russia still has significant connections to Palestine. For example, president of Palestine went to a victory day parade in Moscow this year.

[–] stebo02@sopuli.xyz 13 points 2 months ago

And the US, Europe, and Australia are still "lalala i can't hear you"

that's not just in your head, that's the awful reality we live in

[–] Blackout@fedia.io 34 points 2 months ago (1 children)

People think we are the civilized ones when in reality we are just savages with nukes.

[–] JacksonLamb@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago

People think we are the civilized one

No one thinks that.

[–] svcg@lemmy.blahaj.zone 19 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The worst part of this map is that they use a different shade of green in the key to the one they use in the map. /s

[–] Irelephant@lemm.ee 12 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Why did you have to point this out

[–] svcg@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 2 months ago

I'm sorry, I thought it was obvious. I can't not see it.

Myanmar seems like an odd gap. A quick search just seems to say Myanmar and Israel have a long diplomatic history and some minor arms sales?

[–] Saleh@feddit.org 14 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Well Myanmar is run by a military dictatorship that murders, disappears and tortures civillians, and has an ongoing public resistance against it since a few years.

When Iran was ruled by the Shah Israel were best buddies and help arm and train his army and intelligence. Guess what they did: murder, disappear and torture tens of thousands of civillians.

When South Africa was still an Apartheid state, Israel was also good friends with them. Guess what they did...

[–] JacksonLamb@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Yeah Israel is one of half a dozen countries that continued to deal arms to Myanmar after the Rohingya Genocide.

Canada, Greenland, Australia, and Japan should totally recognize Palestine. It's not like they need to keep pleasing the US now that it's actively spitting in their face.

[–] pupbiru@aussie.zone 9 points 2 months ago

honestly australia is kinda between a rock and a hard place … we have to ride the line between US and china because we’re hugely strategic to china with all our raw resources, with little to no ability to actually defend ourselves because we have such a huge land mass and tiny population (we’re about the size of the US in land mass with a population slightly smaller than texas: imagine if texas alone had to defend the entire US)

we aren’t europe: if we piss off the US we don’t have the money or population to pivot

… also the US has been involved with overturning our elected government twice

that said, we’ve been getting much closer to recognising palestinian recently

[–] Hansae@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 2 months ago

Greenland has to abide by Danish policy for foreign relations as its part of the Danish crown. Denmark should recognise it though.

[–] MadMadBunny@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yeah… disgustingly strong zionist lobbying in Canada…

[–] skisnow@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 months ago

Corbyn in the UK ten years ago had a huge groundswell of popular support that at one point looked like carrying Labour to a 1997-style landslide, until he was taken down by an organised campaign of pearl-clutchy disingenuous accusations of anti-semitism over his support for Palestine; a campaign that the neoliberals in his party were all too happy to play along with.

[–] rabber@lemmy.ca 0 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It's something to do with the stupid Commonwealth, not the US

[–] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 2 months ago

I think I'm going to need a source on that one. We've had independent foreign policy for a long time.

.....and Aotearoa/New Zealand falls off the map again. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡° )

[–] asret@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 months ago

Given our stance it's probably for the best this time.

I'm surprised that there's so many countries who recognize Palestine. Is this a recent development?

[–] renzhexiangjiao@lemmy.blahaj.zone 44 points 2 months ago

no, the communist bloc and non-aligned countries recognised palestine in opposition to the western bloc's support of israel, right when palestine declared its independence in 1988

[–] Irelephant@lemm.ee 22 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Ireland (and norway iirc) only recognised palestine recently.

[–] stebo02@sopuli.xyz 7 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

spain too i think

edit: This wikipedia page has a table which you can sort by date if recognition

All the countries that recognized Palestine in the last two years are: Mexico (Feb 2025), Armenia, Slovenia (June 2024), Ireland, Norway, Spain, The Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago (May 2024), Jamaica, Barbados (April 2024)

[–] RadioFreeArabia@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

The recent development is the recognition by some European and Caribbean countries. The rest of the world has recognized Palestine for decades.

Typical feddit.org account

[–] kandoh@reddthat.com 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Isn't Malta like the last Crusader state? Pretty sure the knights of malta have some sort of UN special observer status.

[–] renzhexiangjiao@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 2 months ago

Knights of Malta do have an observer status in the UN, but they're unrelated to the Republic of Malta, which the post is about.

Even Comoros recognize Palestine since 1988

[–] RadioFreeArabia@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

Comoros is a member of the Arab League.

[–] loomy@lemy.lol 4 points 2 months ago

ok but why is it orange?

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Fingers crossed that Malta's support is what finally gets this nonsense sorted out once and for all.

[–] Knightfox@lemm.ee 1 points 2 months ago

Wow that's a whole lot of countries sending thoughts and prayers.

[–] omega_x3@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Isn't that just the gum that the boot is about to step on after kicking Sicily?
