One of the knobs on the thing in FO4 definitely looks like the kind you used to see in cars all the time.

Also somewhat related: I actually have a cigarette lighter+ashtray combo 5 inch drive bay for a PC I got from ThinkGeek way back in the day. I even used to have it installed in the case (but not plugged in to the PSU and didn't use the ashtray for real). I never trusted that much heat being purposely generated by my machine, nor did I want to shove a cup full of ash into it lol

Everyone would have the same burn scar sort of like how older Belters in the Expanse universe have burn scars from shorting wires inside old vac suits.

I'm about to get pedantic.

Those scars were not the result of faulty wiring. Early belter space suits were built cheaply, often without proper insulation, especially around the mating area of the helmet. The suits would heat up in the sunlight, but without an atmosphere (and thus convection), wouldn't be able to cool down, and would burn the unprotected skin. Heat management is also why contemporary EVA suits are white.

Wouldn't be constant I'm sure. Just a little heating element you can turn on and off.

Pip-boys are powered by fission batteries, why would you want it off when you have all the energy you need?

Save the cores for power armour

Right... folks in Boston forgot how to make long-lasting batteries.

So you don't burn yourself

But where's the fun in that? You got to have those heating coils exposed and ready at any time so you can light up a cigarette as soon as the cravings hit!
