Pretty sure it's just that diluted nonsense y'all call "orange." You don't even compensate with some other color, like a nice blue.

I once decorated bookmark orange (vols) and blue (peyton era colts) for my mother and she threw it away because it was gata colors

I grew up with pan-southern parents who went to a school without football (go Ospreys!) and would have a hard time figuring out who to root for in most SEC and half of ACC games. My mom never did quite understand how undergrad trumps grad.
For anybody wondering...
The nickname "49ers" derives from the fact that the university's predecessor, Charlotte Center of the University of North Carolina (CCUNC - established in 1946) was saved from being shut down by the state in 1949 by Bonnie Ethel Cone, when the Charlotte Center became Charlotte College.
