"The ID.2 will be the tip of the electric hot hatch iceberg. Beyond the Golf GTI, the portfolio will ultimately grow to include an electric successor to the Golf R that will retain the current car’s all-wheel-drive layout."

"Auto Express adds that Volkswagen will continue to update the current, eighth-generation Golf through the end of the decade. There’s no word yet on whether that means the current GTI will live on until 2030."

And I doubt it will be sold in North America.

Honestly I'd be really surprised. They may have cut the base Golf here but the MK8 GTI and R have a pretty strong presence, despite the interior controversy and so on.
