This is a halmark or reactionary ideology.
They have sincere beliefs, but they lie about which ones. What they desire about all else is to permanently install the "proper" heirarchy.
They'll use any tool at their disposal to accomplish this task, and all other beliefs are subordinated to it.
They support free speech for their ideas, but have no issue shutting down "woke" leftists because "think of the children." They support riots that seek to overturn an election they lost, but love it when the police crack BLM skulls.
They're amoral power-hungry ghouls who would rather destroy the country than see a more equitable society. They're fueled by the hatred of people they see as their inferiors being allowed a seat at the table.

Right side is ignoring the ongoing effects of slavery even after losing the civil war.
The underlying messaging is consistent even if the 'keep vs hide' rhetoric has changed.
Alternatively, he isn't trying to preserve the heritage of the confederacy, but of the 1960s when many of these statues were built.

Conservatives just want to feel good about themselves by value of their race, gender, and nationality. They see shared myths valorizing these aspects as incredibly comforting and valuable.
They hate and despise people on the left who shatter these myths. To them, people on the left are diminishing not just men, white people, and Americans as a whole - but they themselves personally.
