I myself use Mullvad as my base for everything so I never use the internet without having Mullvad switched on will full kill switches deployed. I only deactivate for making payments..
One of the main things is that Mullvad will stop Google from storing all of your searches which apparently they always used to keep and could be linked back to your IP address.
Nowadays I no longer bother using antivirus software I just use Windows 10's native antivirus, I use Windows 10 firewall.
I use Google Chrome with uBlock origin installed. ( I know that Chrome isn't that great really) - I like the idea of either Brave or Mullvad browser if I needed extra levels of security for some reason and if I was visiting China I think I would run TAILS or at least Tor browser bundle.
It seems that over time Windows has become more secure perhaps as I seem to have to install less secure software and nobody installs firewalls, antivirus software or antimalware software.
My biggest tool that brings me peace of mind is Mullvad VPN though
