Hello friends,

I will be traveling from the USA to Saudi Arabia. Last time I went, they searched my computer, phone, and external hard drives and I let them do it because I was scared. This time, I intend to save my personal files to a cloud service called "Filen" and place dummy data on my devices so they can eat shit.

MY PLAN: I wish to encrypt my files using a software called "Cryptomator" before putting them on the cloud. Once I cross the border, I plan to use public wifi to download my files back to my devices where they will stay for the remainder of my trip. My threat model does not involve random searches, I just need to get across the border. I only need to encrypt and store 2TB of data on the cloud but I want to make sure I run it past you all to see if I am doing it right.

QUESTION: I am getting overwhelmed because it has taken about 5 hours to upload an encrypted 40GB chunk of data to the cloud. Is this normal? Also, this got me thinking that I will not have the time to sit around in public wifi locations for days on end while I download my data from the cloud. Should I be compressing these files into ZIP's before encrypting, after encrypting, or something else?

Thank you for your help with this.
