It's actually more circular when they put it down but the heat causes slight melting and restructuring to the hexagonal shape because hex is lower energy and structurally stronger.

easy way of visualizing it is like putting a bunch of bubbles next to each other, you'll end up with a hexagonal pattern and the edges merge into straight lines.
