Tbh, it was very nice getting a warning on our phones at the same time of hearing the rumbling in the distance (a telltale sign of a coming earthquake).

TIL in the moments preceding an earthquake, nature will rumble and send out warnings to phones
When an earthquake starts, it generates these seismic waves called primary high frequency waves or P-waves that travel super fast and secondary movement waves or S-waves that come with potential damage.
Earthquake early warning systems work by detecting those initial P-waves and quickly estimate the earthquake's location, magnitude, and intensity, sending alerts before the more destructive S-waves arrive at the surface.
It's those same P-waves, which we can hear as rumbles in the ground before the shakes start.
I appreciate that explanation! I was just having fun with your choice of punctuation and attributing "a telltale sign of a coming earthquake" with the phone warning.

Yeah, I got a phone warning before the last earthquake I experienced in Washington. It's pretty cool, but I got the notification probably 15 seconds before I felt it. Maybe I could have planned better if I had longer, but it was like a 4.5 so it didn't matter. Japan has a really good advanced warning system, the notification sound is pretty eerie.
I got an alert on my phone, but didn't feel any shaking in downtown San Diego.

That was the first time I had gotten the notification. I’m in the IE so we got some moderate shaking, nothing we aren’t used to though.
Over here in Yucaipa I didn't feel shit, but I was already shaking because I needed salt so maybe that's why.
We got a Shake Alert 100 miles away in Los Angeles. Didn't feel anything, though, which is expected for a quake this size.
8km ESE of Borrego Springs, CA at a depth of 10km. M3.5.
This story is about the much stronger 5.2 in Julian, not the 3.5 you are talking about.

I looked on my earthquake app, and that was the first one I saw. 5.2 is a whole lot bigger!
Ah here it is, 5km S of Julian, CA 14km depth, M5.2
It doesn't help that the site would show aftershocks as the first hit instead of the primary quake.

It's a very small town. I lived there for years, 1500 people and maybe 3 stop signs. There are 3 pie places. Julian Cafe is the best and I will fight you, Mom's supporters. Julian Pie Company is fine. Cinnamon ice cream makes up for just okay pie.
