My bro is merely acquiring mass

Female velvet spiders exhibit a remarkable type of maternal care unique among arachnids. Upon the birth of her brood, the mother spider liquefies her internal organs and regurgitates this material as food. Once her capability to liquefy her insides is exhausted, the young sense this and consume the mother.

I'm not at all arachnophobic - I'll often pick spiders up with my hand to put them outside - but I don't think I could let this one crawl on me without crying.

[–] MyFriendGodzilla@lemmy.world 9 points 11 months ago (1 children)

They're like jumping spiders that cant jump... pretty chill ladies i believe.

[–] AFKBRBChocolate@lemmy.world 11 points 11 months ago

I don't think that changes anything.

[–] fireweed@lemmy.world 13 points 11 months ago (2 children)

For the curious, the original text says "cute" in Japanese (the infamous "kawaii")

[–] ZILtoid1991@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago
[–] BellaDonna@mujico.org -5 points 11 months ago (1 children)

What? No it doesn't. かわいい is usually written in Hiragana. I've never seen it written this way. 可愛い I've never seen it with these Kanji. I mean it kinda makes sense, with what 愛 means, but I've never seen this.

[–] SpaceScotsman@startrek.website 3 points 11 months ago

https://jisho.org/word/%E5%8F%AF%E6%84%9B%E3%81%84

those kanji in that order are read as "kawaii"

It's the only way to be sure.

[–] JokeDeity@lemm.ee 6 points 11 months ago (1 children)

No one's commented anything that indicates to me whether or not this is real. If so, what's the species?

[–] fossilesque@mander.xyz 12 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (2 children)
[–] JokeDeity@lemm.ee 4 points 11 months ago

Oh dang, I thought the title was just a cute description.

[–] JokeDeity@lemm.ee 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Any idea what specific species? Looks like there's a lot of velvet spiders from that wiki.

[–] fossilesque@mander.xyz 5 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I updated the comment. Eresidae; Gandanameno sp.

Did humans inadvertently body shame a spider?

[–] derfunkatron@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

It’s like a fuchikoma/tachikoma from Ghost in the Shell.
