I hope that doesn't pass, but if it does they should remove the "Ted" part off the next ballot. His constituents will be like "Who tf is Rafael?"

Edit: spelling

… and why hasn’t ICE gotten him by now?

[–] ray@sh.itjust.works 14 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Probably because he self-deported to Cancun

[–] pneumatron@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 year ago

He's of cuban descent. Thankfully not one of us (Mexicans). Fuck that pos

"Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect."

Useful idiot

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Which ballet is next? The Nutcracker?

[–] potoo22@programming.dev 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

😝 Damn English. Inconsistent Frankenstein language.

[–] Soup@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

As someone who has to regularly remind myself not to be too hard on weird things in French, I think you just needed to learn a new word. They’re different words.

pointing out the hypocrisy means nothing to these people. their entire philosophy is about making it legally not a hypocrisy. they want laws that protect them and don't limit them while they have an other that the laws don't protect but do limit.

This has come to be known as 'Wilhoit's Law,' based on an online comment from a music composer:

“Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition …There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect."

yep, that's the quote i was poorly paraphrasing.

[–] Kichae@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 year ago

It does help prevent more people from falling under their spell. It just needs to be done on every issue.

Just so everyone is aware, this bill was previously introduced Oct 2023 and reported by news late Nov/early Dec 2023 and looks like it was reintroduced March 4, 2025.

The bill is called Safeguarding Free Speech Act. The below link was what I could find about it.

https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/119/s839

[–] FoxyFerengi@lemm.ee 18 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Speech so free that you can't introduce yourself as any name besides what your parent(s) put on a document at your birth! I wonder if they defined legal name, or if we'll be calling people by their full names from now on.

Fun facts about Rafael: he likes incest porn, and he once tried to win a debate by eating his own boogers.

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

STEP incest porn. Let they who have not gooned to Cory Chase throw the first stone.

[–] PurpleSkull@lemm.ee 5 points 1 year ago

Had to google her, don't recognize her. Here's my thrown stone. Don't look at the glass castle behind me.

*Sen. Rafael Edward Cruz (He/Rep)

[–] MehBlah@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago (2 children)

He is Rafael from now on. No matter what.

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 year ago

Lol he really doesn't want his state to think that he's Hispanic. He wants them to think he's as Spanish as Tom Cruise. Wonder why.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago

Good thing she doesn't have preferred pronouns, either.

[–] Waffle 6 points 1 year ago

San Antonio mentioned - let's gooooo!

[–] Droggelbecher@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm nb and my chosen name is a short form of my middle name. I wonder how he'd feel about that.

[–] samus12345@lemm.ee 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You're more "correct" than he is, since "Ted" isn't anywhere in his name!

[–] con_fig@programming.dev 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)
[–] Blum0108@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago (2 children)

His middle name is Tedward

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 year ago

I thought it was short for Theodward.

[–] Emerald@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

Tedward

Drives?

[–] samus12345@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

"Ted" is short for "Theodore," not "Edward."

EDIT: I stand corrected.

[–] con_fig@programming.dev 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)
[–] samus12345@lemm.ee 9 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

Oh, okay, I've never known any Edwards who use "Ted." One of those weird things like William -> Bill or Richard -> Dick, I guess.

[–] con_fig@programming.dev 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Just to note, I'm in no way backing Cruz, he's a deplorable waste of space. Fuck em.

[–] samus12345@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

Oh, I know! I appreciate being corrected.

[–] cooperativesrock@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

Edward 'Ted' Kennedy was another.

[–] ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I like to call Theodores "Odor". It's right there in the name!

[–] samus12345@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

There's an H, too, so go for the full "Hodor!"

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Just refer to him as Sñr Cruz , doesn't matter that it should be Sr if it was Mr and that "Senator" doesn't have a "ny" sound.

I prefer to call him "Rafist".
