The Moomins is a franchise created by finnish author/illustrator Tove Jansson. It features a vast amount of comics, TV series, movies, books and games, telling various stories mostly set in moominvalley.

OG Moomins were darker than the 90s anime.
TBF, the anime primarily adapted the books, which were much more thoughtful works by Jansson.
I HIGHLY recommend them. They are fantastic, introspective works, each inspired by the state Janssons life was in, when she wrote them.
