The panspermia vessel was to break up low in the atmosphere as to maximise soul and bacterial propagation.

The bacteria known as The Cult, took control of its victims in mere minutes; a most insidious plague. One minute you're having lunch with your mom, the next, she stops mid-sentence and leaves without a word.

Breaking up in the atmosphere (any atmosphere) typically involves a large amount of heat, those cultists might be a little disappointed in their dead bacteria
