Hi all, I am looking into getting my first NAS (considering a synology or Ugreen 4bay) but one of my major challenges is finding a place to put the unit. My router is tucked behind my TV in my family room and I can't rearrange things in a way there for a NAS to fit.

There is a very convenient space in my basement right next to my ONT (I have Verizion Fios ONT I-211M-K).

I'm new to all this but I wouldn't be surprised if bypassing my router to connect directly to the ONT posed a security risk but I don't know if that's true or whether there are some extra precautions I could take to make this less risky. I appreciate any help and apologies if this is not the proper thread to ask something like this!
