Someone tell me there's a Culture world like this just because Iain M Banks thought it'd be a fun challenge

Edit: I'm turning this into a Culture thread with a screenshot of me proselytizing it to my friends

And yes I really loved Player of Games omg can someone else read it yet

I just started reading the player of games the other day. Love it!

[–] A_Union_of_Kobolds@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago

It's so much fun, I blazed through it on vacation. I wanna play!!!!

I just finished a player of games a few months ago! Someone suggested the series to me here on lemmy (perhaps you? Lol. I never take note of screen names when I should), and I read Phlebas and APoG before I got distracted. It's so good. Like ridiculously good. Phlebas wasn't quite my speed, not bad by any stretch, I just found myself wishing for more of what there was little of and less of what there was much of, but APoG was fantastic and exactly what I was looking for!

from a topological perspective, it’s pretty uncontroversial to say that the earth is indeed a hotdog.

[–] HikingVet@lemmy.ca 5 points 5 months ago

Sir Bedevere:
...and that, my liege, is how we know the Earth to be banana shaped.

King Arthur:
This new learning amazes me, Sir Bedevere. Explain again how sheep's bladders may be employed to prevent earthquakes.

[–] CaptainBlagbird@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Wouldn't that be just a sausage? A hot dog also has bread.

[–] essell@lemmy.world 0 points 5 months ago (2 children)

I believe you're thinking of a hotdog bun. Different thing.

They're a natural pairing and often found together, like when we say "would you like an ice-cream?" The ice cream cone is implied.

[–] CaptainBlagbird@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago

Ah I see. I guess it's a language/cultural thing.

Here hot dog refers to the combination of the sausage with the bun. E.g. you can use the bun for making a sandwich instead and the sausage (usually a Wiener Würstchen or Frankfurter Würstchen) in a soup or together with potatoes, or in other meals.

Where I live, they would ask "cone or cup?" for the ice cream.
