It's a map with routing information, live traffic, road work etc. Offline maps available if needed but obviously no live traffic reporting then. Based on OpenStreetMap.

How does it compare to Organic Maps and why can't i find it on fdroid?

[โ€“] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 18 points 5 months ago (1 children)

This is better for driving while Organic Maps is open source, more private and better for walking, hiking and cycling.

[โ€“] CAVOK@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Agree with all your other points, but is Organic Maps actually more private?

This seems pretty fair to me.

https://www.magicearth.com/privacy/

Also, how to you get a new paragraph in the old.lemmy.world UI?

[โ€“] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 16 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

Magic Earth collects data on location while Organic Maps does not collect any.

Iโ€™m not so familiar with Mlymn (old lemmy ui)

[โ€“] CAVOK@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago

Doesn't collect anything in offline mode, does it?

Either way, both are awesome in their own right. ME for car navigation, OM for everything else.

And then StreetComplete to help them both. :-)

Magic Earth is proprietary software, so regardless of what their privacy policy says, you cannot audit the code to verify whether or not they are collecting data and what data they collect.

Organic Maps, on the other hand, is libre software, so you can audit the code and verify what it is and isn't doing.

Magic Earth is proprietary.

I think, it's closer to OsmAnd, which also offers navigation.

Thank you, I've been meaning to look for a Waze replacement.
I'll be sure to try this out on my drive tomorrow.

[โ€“] CAVOK@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Happy to help. It's not as polished as Waze, but it gets the job done. Maybe more users will improve it still.

I'm checking it out a bit, it seems to be quite nice.

One thing I noticed however, is that the lane-suggestions for roundabouts are simply wrong.
It seems to be an oddly common issue with alternative nagivation apps.. Sygic had this issue as well.

[โ€“] CAVOK@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago

That might be an issue with the source data, ie OpenStreetMap.

[โ€“] bitnapper 4 points 5 months ago

Iโ€™m using it for years and Iโ€™m very happy with it.

[โ€“] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 7 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Waze is bad for privacy reasons I'm guessing?

[โ€“] Nougat@fedia.io 26 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Waze is a Google property. That's enough for some people. (No shade meant there, that's as valid a reason as any.)

[โ€“] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 6 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Oh, well fuck me sideways then. I had no idea. It's it possible to request all my Waze data be deleted?

[โ€“] Humanius@lemmy.world 13 points 5 months ago (1 children)

If you are a European you can always file a GDPR deletion request

I am sure wishing I was a European right now, my friend. For so many reasons.

[โ€“] CubitOom 3 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

I haven't actually used Waze but all Google products ive used have gone down hill dramatically in the past couple years. And that's before you get into the moral implications of using a Google product. So I've been replacing all Google services. Been using magic earth for about a year and it's really good, better than google maps.

[โ€“] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 4 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Theyโ€™re also Israeli.

Oh come on. Unreal. So many people swear by that app, and I never even looked I to it

[โ€“] ShotDonkey@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago

Works fine but is a black box privaxy wise.

OsmAnd also offers navigation/routing and is available via Fdroid.

[โ€“] imvii@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I tried it. The address for my business in Prince Edward Island Canada was incorrect and it didn't have a clue about my home address on the island.

[โ€“] CAVOK@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago

Something that's fairly easy to fix. But I get what you're saying.

However, if you want to help, just log in to openstreetmap and fix it.
