Nothing special, just wanted to make a post because I'm extremely proud of myself today. Reddit was the only thing holding me back, and I'm happy to say that I've just deleted my 8 year old account. I'm now only using open source apps for my android and desktop OS and it feels amazing!

It doesn't have to be all-or-nothing. It's about running as much FLOSS as you can.

Congratulations!

Nobody tell them about their firmware.

Graphene OS and Debian - trying my best 🥹

[–] Eyekaytee@aussie.zone 45 points 5 months ago

perfect is the enemy of good

This isn't an all-or-nothing thing.

For Windows users, it's already a good progress to switch to Firefox/VLC/LibreOffice/NextCloud from closed source alternatives.

[–] anzo@programming.dev 3 points 5 months ago

Firefox and VLC were my gateway drugs when I was a teeny pirate discovering the Internet and even computers :)

Dashero is doing great work with coreboot. Several latop vendors sell it preinstalled

[–] girlthing@lemmy.blahaj.zone 25 points 5 months ago (4 children)

cool, now send a link to your source code so we can fork you

[–] 0ops@lemm.ee 7 points 5 months ago

Whaat?! FORK YOOUUU!!

[–] burgersc12@mander.xyz 6 points 5 months ago

Bro's about to get upgraded, no more walking into a room and going "wait, why'd I walk into this room again"

[–] jagged_circle@feddit.nl 4 points 5 months ago

I'd like to submit a PR

[–] Lazycog@sopuli.xyz 25 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Bit late seeing your account is already 2mo old but nevertheless: welcome to the fediverse :)

[–] _LordMcNuggets_@feddit.org 15 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Thank you (: Had to see if Lemmy would be a reliable alternative - and surely enough it is!

[–] Atelopus-zeteki@fedia.io 6 points 5 months ago

Yay! And welcome!

Me reading the title: "Please give me a copy of your DNA so that I may compile you from source."

[–] jagged_circle@feddit.nl 5 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

OP is an AI bot, so this is possible. Yes.

[–] Vodulas@beehaw.org 8 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

How do you figure that?

[–] SplashJackson@lemmy.ca 11 points 5 months ago

But what about your DNA? Have you reversed your specific genome yet?

Where should I read your source code?

[–] iTaiko@beehaw.org 8 points 5 months ago

Cool, it's a continual process, but a good one!

I was 100% open source for a while until i needed to buy tickets for the public transport in my area.

[–] IndianaJones@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Were there no ticket offices?

[–] silmarine@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 5 months ago

Yeah but at the time i needed something quick and there was lines. Since then its always been the easier and quicker option. I just to get over that like i did many other things.

[–] jagged_circle@feddit.nl 4 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

You can't use cash? In my country its illegal for them not to sell services in cash.

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 7 points 5 months ago (3 children)

What about the CPU and RAM?

[–] Vodulas@beehaw.org 23 points 5 months ago

Hand stitched

[–] _LordMcNuggets_@feddit.org 8 points 5 months ago (1 children)

This is interesting actually and a good point. But surely they don't pose a big security or privacy breach risk? I'm fairly uneducated in this field.

[–] Undearius@lemmy.ca 13 points 5 months ago

We're just poking for a bit of fun. The Free and Open Source rabbit hole goes very deep. For example, Intel and AMD processors have code on them that isn't free meaning the purists will not use them unmodified.

Everyone has a threshold where privacy and freedom interfere with convenience, just stick with the level you're comfortable with.

No joke, I briefly looked into whether it would be possible to fabricate my own PCBs. I'm quite handy with soldering and MIGHT be okay placing my chips.

Turns out it is possible, but not at the board density we enjoy. The time and cost of materials also make it unreasonable.

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 7 points 5 months ago (1 children)

The board isn't the issue, the CPU and RAM have firmware running on them.

[–] SpikesOtherDog@ani.social 7 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Oh, then OP will most likely need to replace their hardware with something like Framework, as I can't see x86-64 becoming open.

Baby steps are okay too.

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Oh definately, I was just in a pedantic mood (:

[–] SpikesOtherDog@ani.social 3 points 5 months ago

I was going to press you on the firmware for the CPU, but I was unaware that CPU microcode exists and is built to live in the cache.

They USS GrapheneOS which is based on AOSP (Android Open Source Project) both are FOSS

[–] jagged_circle@feddit.nl 3 points 5 months ago

Lol of course, yes.

[–] chemicalwonka@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 5 months ago

you can't be 100% free software (I reject the term Open Source), you'll always have a device with lots of binary blobs and proprietary firmware. The holy grail of 100% free software is currently unattainable
