This one is going to hurt everyone in far-reaching and unrecoverable ways.

I would like to know more. This one wasn't on my anxieties list, but apparently it should be.

A big part of the NIST's job is providing standard samples so everyone can measure accurately. From weights of ingredients, to determining exact compositions of food, pharmaceuticals, drinking water, etc. its all measured relative to a NIST standard. Every scale you've ever used was calibrated against a weight that several steps back was ultimately calibrated against a NIST standard. Without a good standard, it's basically impossible to accurately measure anything.

NIST is a very important party in researching quantum resistant cryptography

It's not inflation guys! The ounce is just smaller now.

oh you thought it was an imperial ounce on the package? no see johnson & johnson purchased the ounce and now there are multiple. the ounce you see on their packaging is a smaller “packaging ounce”

Maybe we can finally switch to the metric system, given there won't be anyone left to keep the imperial standards. /s

Some dude somewhere in the States is reading your comment and thinking: they said I was crazy for collecting thousands of sundials and even more guns and ammunition. Now I have the means to control time and the means to protect my newfound power!

We have to increase ignorance at all cost!

[One NIST team that has been fearing cuts because of its number of probationary employees is the US AI Safety Institute (AISI), which was created after former President Joe Biden’s sweeping executive order on AI issued in October 2023. Trump rescinded the order shortly after taking office last month, describing it as a “barrier to American leadership in artificial intelligence.”]

I'm sure that people creating the new Skynet AI are very relieved.
