I can't be the only one who feels like this is the absolute lowest priority of dumb shit to resist the regime over. It's just filler. Another thing he is doing to flood the zone. But one that really doesn't hurt anything. It's a distraction. Ignore it and focus on the actual damage he is doing.

[–] GreatBlueHeron@lemmy.ca 36 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I get what you're saying but, as someone observing from outside, stuff like this is all I can do to resist.

[–] fushuan@lemm.ee 6 points 10 months ago (2 children)

As someone from the outside, you wouldn't even see the US specific naming. If complaining in a bug report about the fact and threatening to abandon the platform in favour of Linux is all you can do, man, don't bother xD.

Yah, it feels like someone tossing a ball behind a dog. "Look over there! Go get it!"

[–] Yerbouti@sh.itjust.works 12 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (4 children)

Yeah, I mean it's just books those nazis are burning, it doesn't hurt anything, no need to discuss it. /s

US fascists are fucking rewriting the world map and eradicating historical name, I consider it actual damage.

[–] fruitycoder@sh.itjust.works 30 points 10 months ago

Actual book burning is the scientific data and articles being purged and saved (for now) by the Internet archive

Honestly - this is from a playbook used by every autocratic administration: “Take the attention away from the more important things”. Seen it in EU constantly: Hungary, Slovakia, Serbia, etc. So sure, report it, but be aware this is a charade.

[–] Petter1@lemm.ee 17 points 10 months ago

It is the main thing Trump is good at:

Creating some drama/infuriation to keep news noisy in order to hide his fascist dictator playbook moves

Wrote App Store review, then deleted maps. Installed Organic Maps to replace.

[–] glitchdx@lemmy.world 7 points 10 months ago (3 children)

is there an easy way to export all my map markers from google to organic? I've saved a lot of locations over the years.

Truth is, these big companies don't care about you. Or your opinion. You can threaten them about "switching to Linux", but these companies will think twice and say:

  • if we take this complaint seriously, we might retain one (1) customer, which makes us $1000 in the future
  • if we follow Trump, we might get some favorable legislation, which makes us $10000000

how, do you think, will apple react?

[–] neoscaler@feddit.org 44 points 10 months ago

Do it. Move to Linux.

[–] notsoshaihulud@lemmy.world 32 points 10 months ago (1 children)
[–] garretble@lemmy.world 7 points 10 months ago

Yep.

I have tried on my phone and Mac, and I can't submit anything. Even for other locations.

[–] adespoton@lemmy.ca 25 points 10 months ago (2 children)

That’s odd; my Apple Maps says “Gulf of Mexico” and searching for “Gulf of America” shows 0 results.

Unlike Google Maps/Earth….

[–] cmnybo@discuss.tchncs.de 29 points 10 months ago (3 children)

You have to access it from a US IP address to get the new name.

[–] brewery@lemmy.world 11 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

From a UK or German IP address, Google maps has it as Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America).

We're being dragged into this mess so will look to report it

What difference does this make? Some lower level employee will see this, roll his eyes, and then continue on with his day.

Beyond this, do you think Apple can actually take any other position than aligning with fascism? That was always going to happen. They literally can't help but align with fascism- this is the culmination of late stage capitalism.

It's like politely asking a dog not to salivate when it sees a steak in front of it.

You're not gonna get anywhere and you're just wasting time.

Also on a side note- you should switch to Linux because you should take charge of your own hardware and learn how it works before it's taken away from you. You should do it for open source and for freedom. Not threaten to do something because a company is doing company things.

you push back every step of the way. that's how you deal with it. Apple maps reporting getting shut down for this is a sign that someone at a higher level took notice and it will have feedback to even higher leadership. So yes, this is feedback, even if companies do company things, it's also sending a signal that on the long run their company things might be better off aligning with the users. Is this gonna make any difference on its own? Nope, but a million of things like this may.

Don't waste your time with stuff like this. Install an alternative app - OpenStreetMap is great and does have the correct name.

[–] LeTak@lemm.ee 22 points 10 months ago (2 children)

https://ravynos.com/ Switch to MacOS without Apple when it is finally released.

[–] SomethingBurger@jlai.lu 6 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Is this another ReactOS situation, or does this have a chance to actually become usable as a daily driver?

There is a better chance that user reporting for this will be disabled more so than it is that this would make a difference. You know that right?

If this latest drama with Apple Maps (and Google Maps) is what pushes someone over the edge to looking for more user respecting options then the people further gone than I would really be comfortable getting used to. Both companies regularly do much more than should do more to turn you off.

[–] FireTower@lemmy.world 22 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Shout out to the menial workers at Apple Maps who are going to have a crap day at work tomorrow because of the thing their boss made them do, so they don't get fired and replaced by someone else who would do it.

Done ✅

Now let's use this opportunity to find some FOSS options like Organic Maps

[–] Eyedust@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 10 months ago (5 children)

If you want to go even further, you can grab StreetComplete and have fun wandering your neighborhood while contributing to OpenStreetMap by answering questions for things like business hours, road widths, road materials, etc. Unfortunately, it seems to be android only at the moment and I'm not sure if there's an iOS alternative.

Also, reporting that Trump Tower (either) should be renamed Mexico Tower feels pretty good.

[–] B312@lemmy.world 20 points 10 months ago

The linux part is cringe. Just move if you don’t want to use apple’s os

[–] JustZ@lemmy.world 20 points 10 months ago

Google disabled reports and editing for it.

[–] Lemjukes@lemm.ee 17 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

~~lol, the iOS app won’t let me submit a ‘name is wrong’ report.~~

I’m dumb

[–] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 15 points 10 months ago (2 children)

I'm going to start calling it the United States of America of Mexico and sometimes Canada.

A waste of our time for sure, but I did it as well.

[–] sic_semper_tyrannis@lemmy.today 13 points 10 months ago (2 children)

You should abandon Apple for Linux anyways. Apple doesn't care about you, your privacy, or anything but them making more money, from you. This has been proven time and time again by evidence and whistleblowers.

alternate name for this article: "How to feel good about yourself while doing something that doesn't help anything at all"

[–] paraphrand@lemmy.world 11 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

It says my report is “in review” and I’ll be notified when they review it.

I wonder how that will go, and how fast.

I assume they have mechanisms to just push mass reports into a black hole. Or similar.

[–] yonder@sh.itjust.works 15 points 10 months ago

Don't worry. They can send the reports to /dev/null where they will be read by Tim Apple himself when he checks it.

[–] FireWire400@lemmy.world 11 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (2 children)

They don't care.

I'm not denying that it's the moral thing to do but fascists don't give a shit about morals.

lol good luck with that. Did you ever think maybe the reason he's making all these ridiculous changes, is to keep the peanuts busy, while he slashes spending? Cause it seems to be working.

I don't really know how to feel about this.

Was it decreed by an absolute narcissist for no reason other than the kind of blatant arrogance Americans are notorious for? Absolutely.

Was it also completely legal? As far as I can tell. It's not really these companies' place to resist map name changes, it's the citizens' and our representatives'.

Does it have anything at all to do with fascism? No.
