Apple has been suppressing the resistance in russia. They dont give a fuck about freedom or democracy. It’s naive to think theyll do anything but enable trumps takeover

[–] alexc@lemmy.world 62 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Of course not. They’re a corporation. We like to think they’re perhaps less evil than others, but the truth is they would harvest their users internal organs if they thought it would increase shareholder value.

Fuck Capitalism.

[–] TheFriar@lemm.ee 7 points 1 year ago

We’ve known since the beginning their products are made off the suffering of slave labor. Them being evil isn’t new whatsoever.

[–] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 30 points 1 year ago

Tim Apple is literally a financial contributer to the Trump presidency. They are not being shy about their support. I'm Suprised it took them this long, but they've always been a bit behind with their maps project.

This really is the dumbest timeline. I can't even make up satire shit that is more wild than what is now.

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's like the shitpost version of blitzkrieg. Just overwhelming you with absolute diarrhea for the soul. And it's working, even though we all know it's happening.

[–] Phoenicianpirate@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

That's their plan.

[–] tehn00bi@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

Just waiting for the TVA to prune us.

Still says Gulf of Mexico to me. Is the change just for American users then?

[–] IcyToes@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

In the UK, it says both. One above the other.

Spineless and pathetic.

I’m an American and it still says the proper name for me too.

[–] KoalaUnknown@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

For me it shows Golf of Mexico until I zoom in.

[–] dangling_cat@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Lmao its apple map alright

[–] KoalaUnknown@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

Now it just shows Golf of America for me. Seems to have been caused by the live rollout.

Reported an issue with the name. I know I’m shouting into the void on this but a small poke in the eye makes me feel better.

Well, yeah, because the United States Geographical Service is the source of truth for geographical names. No surprise Google and Apple follow it. There's a little more breakdown than that, but that's the gist of it.

https://www.usgs.gov/us-board-on-geographic-names/domestic-names

The change is fucking stupid, you know it, I know it, we all know it. Save your fucking ire for all the real shit going down. In comparison, this doesn't rate a single breath.

[–] taiyang@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

This is correct, given a new administration can simply change it back to keep it in line with the rest of the world. Won't do us much good if there isn't a next administration, though.

[–] cabron_offsets@lemmy.world 33 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Tim Apple is a pussy bitch.

[–] Phoenicianpirate@lemm.ee 31 points 1 year ago

The speed at which these people are capitulating is alarming. I mean it took them decades to even begin to do any kind of rainbow capitalism and they all ditched it like a hot potato in a split second.

I wish this was the in top 10 reasons to be upset with the US right now.

[–] meyotch@slrpnk.net 19 points 1 year ago (1 children)

When you go to report an issue, and select “Name is wrong”, the send button never activates, whereas “something else” will.

So this is a bit of capitulation that seems to be hard coded and they just don’t want to hear about it.

[–] 0ndead 7 points 1 year ago

Correct it to Gulf of Mexico in the name field and then the send button activates

[–] irish_link@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Unlike Google they still have a “report issue” button active.

[–] Wxfisch@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

And I will continue to use it until they take it away

Why are Americans so riled up about this?

Do you guys not realize that this reaction is literally one of the reasons they do this? To be a distraction and to show their base that they made the bad people™ cry about it.

[–] Kbobabob@lemmy.world 30 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Why are Americans so riled up about this?

For me, it's the blatant racism with some fascist nationalism thrown in.

[–] wewbull@feddit.uk 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I think you're under thinking this.

The primary focus of Trump since coming to office has been securing natural resources. Greenland, Canada, Ukraine all have rich mineral deposits. Even the Panama shit is about controlling a geographic "resource"...the canal.

This rename is about making it sound like it belongs to the US. What's there a lot of here? Oil. And it sits under international waters.

[–] Phoenicianpirate@lemm.ee 5 points 1 year ago

The US already has a lot of rights to the oil there. but the rigs aren't pumping because despite the drill, baby, drill crap US oil companies already have too much supply. He wants them to drill just to look like they're doing more shit.

[–] polysics@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Well seeing as how Tim was right up there next to Sundar I'm not the least bit surprised.

Ewww. Deleting the app.

[–] Pacattack57@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

It doesn’t for me that’s weird.

Edit: if you put a pin it does show America

[–] MeekerThanBeaker@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Put all borders in Sharpie, you Apple cowards!!

[–] YurkshireLad@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Google maps on Android shows "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)".

Hot take, but I'd actually be fine with the US calling it the Gulf of the Americas since it is a shared gulf by north and south America. There are examples like the south China Sea and the Persian Gulf that have different names depending on what country you are in. But calling it the Gulf of America is just dumb.

[–] kinsnik@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago (2 children)

the gulf of mexico isn't bordering any country in south america

Yeah gulf of “North America” would be more accurate in that scenario

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

OK, fine, Central America. OP's point still stands.
