Fediverse vs Disinformation

1630 readers
606 users here now

Pointing out, debunking, and spreading awareness about state- and company-sponsored astroturfing on Lemmy and elsewhere. This includes social media manipulation, propaganda, and disinformation campaigns, among others.

Propaganda and disinformation are a big problem on the internet, and the Fediverse is no exception.

What's the difference between misinformation and disinformation? The inadvertent spread of false information is misinformation. Disinformation is the intentional spread of falsehoods.

By equipping yourself with knowledge of current disinformation campaigns by state actors, corporations and their cheerleaders, you will be better able to identify, report and (hopefully) remove content matching known disinformation campaigns.

A Reddit user claimed in early 2025 that they had seen a "security notice" sign on the inner side of a bathroom stall door at DFW International Airport between Dallas and Fort Worth. The text of the purported sign advised individuals of technology that might photograph their genitals to "help keep Texans safe," as part of an "Electronic Genital Verification (EGV) pilot program at the direction of the Office of the Lieutenant Governor."

The user, u/Stickybubs, first posted a picture of the supposed sign on the r/texas subreddit on Feb. 9, with the caption, "Spotted inside DFW airport bathroom stall."

not real. a prank or satire. that's their dimwitted lieutenant governor's published office line. while dan patrick would support such an effort, i'm sure. he certainly wouldn't volunteer himself or his office to "man the phones".

tl;dr it wasn't real. No one knows who made it. The headline is clickbait and Snopes is making advertising revenue when you click on it.
