Are periodic inspections even a thing in the US? How long before they are made irrelevant by "somebody"?

Yes. And the US operates on a federalist system. Auto inspections are a state level thing.

And it's often a much, much less rigorous inspection than you can get in Europe.

I have been reading the musk biography and based on the chapters about how rapidly and frequently the assembly line was changed in surprised this isn't higher.
