Hi everyone!

2025 is here, and I'm curious to hear your thoughts on Voyager for Lemmy.

  • What features would you like to see added to Voyager in 2025?
  • Are there any bugs or issues that are bothering you?

💜

I try to use Voyager every few months, but keep going back to Sync because:

  • I want more control over the appearance of my feed, comments, and replies. For the feed, Sync provides:

  • The Back stack on Android seems weird. I don't use a lot of apps with bottom nav bars, but I think they should maintain an entry in the back stack for each category. Voyager seems to keep every instance that I've visited as a separate entry.

A lot of people like Voyager, so you're clearly doing a great job. Keep it up!

Apologies. I know I posted a previous comment but wanted to add another request.

Would it be possible to add an option that hides the top and bottom bars while scrolling?

Apart from that, great app.

I spent some time investigating this before. It is possible, but unfortunately not trivial to add. Definitely something I'd like to add though

I’m not sure if this is technically feasible, but I’d like to be able to mark an entire community as being read. Sometimes I subscribe to a new community and I’m just interested in the newer posts. Or some communities, like some that present the news, have so much timely content that they can overwhelm my feed. I’d like to mark the whole community as read in order to keep my feed cleaner and more relevant.

Sometimes I can't scroll voyager when using iPhone mirroring with iOS 18/macOS 15. I haven't been able to pin down what causes it to occur though unfortunately.

I’d love to see a floating action button like Thunder has with configurable shortcuts. I love this feature for quick navigation, dismiss all read (not fully hide since a refresh can bring those posts back), etc.

I’m coming back to add another request idea:

Ability to search Saved posts.

I save a lot of useful things on Lemmy but it’s difficult to find again later. You can’t search Saved Posts in this app nor on the website and you can’t set up an RSS feed like on Reddit to get the articles/posts out to somewhere else.

Even if you know the precise title of the post, general search on Lemmy almost never brings it up in the results.

I think Voyager could certainly help compensate for this shortcoming in Lemmy.

I used Voyager for a while and here are the issues i noticed before I switched to another app (which also has issues):

  1. Gestures for actions tend to take big motions, bigger than is comfortable to me, and the difference between actions is small. Like, I need to swipe very far (and not too fast), and then within a few millimeters, it goes from upvote to downvote. In the end i was just wishing for buttons considering how much work was to reply or downvote.
  2. The combo of auto-marking posts as read when scrolling and hiding read posts doesn't work too well. I frequently refresh my feed to only see stuff I've already seen and the posts stick around until I manually click then, go back and refresh. When I drag down at the top of my feed to refresh, I want to see posts I haven't seen before. Refreshing 2-3 times and seeing nothing new...i don't think anyone expects that from a social media app. Nearly all Lemmy apps seem to have trouble with this behaviour.
  3. I don't think it's a great idea to make "click = comment and thread disappears" the default. I often did it by accident and was very disorienting.
  4. I would often accidentally swipe/touch something, not realize what, and end up at my feed, the post I was looking at entirely gone, and no easy way to go back. To this day I'm not sure how I did that, but each time it a bummer to give up the post I was reading.

Love the app!

Going beyond Apollo, have you ever thought of adapting Voyager to work on Apple TV? Not sure how many this would interest but there’s a lack of Lemmy tv clients.

I used a separate app that would notify me about Reddit posts in selected subreddits if they hit a upvoted or comment threshold. Could be a separate app or built into Voyager. Also helps you keep up with smaller communities if they get drowned out in the main feed.

That would be neat! I don't have any plans for that, but also I would be open to PRs, like the Apple Watch app

Show my alias (This is fine 🔥🐶☕🔥) instead of username (TheBat).

I would love the ability to add in my own images to a link post as the post's thumbnail✨

When I make Youtube posts I use Invidious and sometimes the native thumbnail will load but most often times not. As such I often have to add in the thumbnail into the text details of the post.

Either way thank you and your contributors for the hard work to make Voyager great!🥳

The ability to do sidebar editing would be lit!

Keep up with the great work!
