Hello!

Did a lot of research on setting up my first NAS solution. Which led me to a lot of posts on this subreddit already, so many thanks for all the info already.

Let me first describe my situation a bit:

  • Home network: all Ubiquity
  • Running HomeAssistant server on a Dell OptiPlex 3050 Mini - 8GB ram / i3-7100T
    • Planning to install Jellyfin or Plex soon on this box (but depends on my choice of NAS system)

Things I am looking to store/backup:

  • Several devices: 3 laptops and a couple of ipads, smartphones
  • Photography files: I store all my original RAWs + JPGs + DNGs of LR/PS edits
  • Media: Want to stream series/movies to several devices within our home.
    • Transcoding: might be interested in this, but depends on whether or not my current dell optiplex processor is up for the task of doing this.
    • Also: I mainly watch 1080p stuff, very rarely 4K. The main use case will be subtitles that need to be transcoded because some clients don't take them readily.
  • No outside sharing/ access required
  • Easy way to backup all this data to cloud solution somewhere to have an additional redundancy layer
    • I already use Google One to store all our photos.
    • Read good things about Backblaze as well

What am I currently considering:

  • Ubiquity UNAS Pro
    • Very pleased about all my other Ubiquity equipment, so would fit nicely into the same ecosystem, my camera/security system is also Ubiquity based.
    • Separation of concerns approach: no vm/dockers possible, just the storage. So I'd need to rely on my dell homeserver to run a Plex/Jellyfin server instance. Need to check if that'll be possible. I do kind of like this approach somehow.
    • No Backblaze possibility from what I understand, no idea how easy it is to set this up.
  • Synology 423+ or 923+
    • Tried and tested
      • 423+ leans more towards transcoding because of the intel processor
      • 923+ offers more upgrade possibilities, but not ideal/not great for transcoding

My current reasoning

  • UNAS Pro is the cheapest option, fits well within my ecosystem and I can just use it as a pure network storage.
  • My Dell Optiplex server can ideally handle Jellyfix/Plex transcoding, but bit unsure on this, will need to check, worst case I'll need to upgrade to cover this use case. But this in end might end up more expensive than now just buying another system like Synology that can handle this use case straight out of the box.

Feel free to challenge me or suggest alternatives or things I am overlooking. Pretty daunting figuring this out for the first time :') Thanks!
