Hey fellow data hoarders,
I'm considering picking up an used Sans Digital TR8X12G for around 150 USD to use with some 12TB drives I recently acquired, but I’m feeling a bit skeptical due to its age. Before I dive in, I wanted to see if anyone here has experience with this enclosure or something similar.
A few concerns I have:
- Compatibility: Does this enclosure handle large drives (like 12TB) without issues? I’ve seen older enclosures struggle with large-capacity drives due to firmware or backplane limitations.
- Reliability: Given its age, are there common failure points or quirks I should watch out for (e.g., power supply, fan reliability, backplane degradation)?
- Performance: With modern setups in mind, does the eSATA/port multiplier setup still hold up, or should I look for something with a newer interface like USB-C or Thunderbolt?
- Alternative Recommendations: If the TR8X12G isn’t worth it, what would you recommend for a reliable, budget-friendly multi-bay enclosure that can handle high-capacity drives?
I’m all about maximizing storage efficiency and reliability, so any insights, anecdotes, or recommendations would be super appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help! 🙌
Cheers,
UPDATE 1: The exact model only have 1 USB 3.0 port and not eSata/SAS ports.
