I am currently testing a new server, my first major upgrade into server class hardware (TrueNAS Scale). I have 6x 18TB SAS drives set up and combined into a pool as a single raid-z2 vdev.

The system has 6 more open bays which I plan to use to expand the storage eventually. But I was wondering about the tradeoffs of doing this later, vs. adding the extra 6 drives now and configuring it as a single raidz3 vdev with 12 drives.

I know I would be gaining one drive more usable storage, but that alone isn't enough to sway me.
