Hi there! I recently got my first NAS, and after some experimenting and discussions with my fiancée, we decided to place it in a small wooden box in the hallway.

I'm still in the process of transferring all my data to it (really wishing I had a 10G switch 🥲), and I’ve been monitoring the HDD temperatures. During a roughly hour-long transfer of 400GB, the HDDs reached 47°C (117°F), while the SSDs and CPU hit 50°C (122°F). The wooden box has a few handle holes, which I hoped would provide enough ventilation for the hot air to escape. During idle, the temperatures hover around 35°C (95°F), which seems reasonable to me.

Now, here’s my question: 50°C seems a bit high, doesn’t it?

For context, I’m using two 18TB Exos X20 drives, with plans to add a third - and eventually a fourth - which I assume will lead to even higher temperatures. From what I’ve read online, 50°C is generally considered acceptable, but is it really?

What’s the consensus among the enthusiasts here? I’d appreciate any input on this! Thanks!
