Starting to cave in and thinking of buying a used hard drive for cold storage but don't want to get burned by buying something that's been running since I finished high school.

Since wiping hours is a thing, is faking hours possible? How can I tell if a HDD has really been running for 100 hours instead of 10,000 or any other lie I should look out for?
