Emoji inspiration: I call this part of the year (the time between Boxing Day and New Year's Day) the "never-never times" because some things are open, others are closed, some people are working, a lot not, so fuck all gets done, and if you need anything besides food or groceries, you're basically SOL

Happy International Day of Epidemic Preparedness!

I'mI was answering a question elsewhere and it reminded of what I saw when I went to Kmart today. The store was in an absolute shambles! I mean when I first went in there was a staff member taking things off the shelves in the ladies clothing section that didn't belong and throwing them into big steel cages on wheels that were full of the most random stuff; my first thought was "gee that's an odd way to pick an order" lol. Then as we wandered around I started to notice that, around most of the store the place was in utter disarray. Packages torn open with items missing, and nothing on the shelves corresponding to the shelving tags. But in kids clothing and toys it was absolute carnage. It was like fully 80% of the items had been just ripped off the shelves and thrown back in completely random. I've truly never seen anything like it in my life! Shoes weren't in categories, they were just randomly mixed up and placed on any hanger all together. Shoes were in toys, toys were in homewares, food was everywhere, like a rock star trashed a hotel room. Elder was disgusted by the discovery of random Cheetos and food remnants just shoved in amongst the toys on the shelves, crumbs everywhere. He wanted a NERF gun and had to take care to find one which was unopened and unpillaged from. Many packages were ripped open and presumably stolen from. It was in such a state that I don't honestly know how you'd even begin to sort it out! A percentage of the stock had just been chucked on the floor and left there. Surely this is not a normal post boxing day sale thing; I've seen the old days of Fosseys and Forges and I've done boxing Day sales in the past. This was just incredible to see, like in part the store had been deliberately wrecked. I just had to share my middle-aged shock somewhere.

I love this part of the year. Still have just over 2 weeks of leave left.

That panic i normally get when it's Sunday and time to go back to work has receeded. For now.

Pulled off the ultimate prank on the mother in law. They ALWAYS leave cash somewhere when they stay and it shits me to high hell. but she just dropped me off to the airport in her car that she didn’t notice had a mysteriously full tank of petrol. Bloody got her!

Got startled awake thinking someone was standing outside of my window talking.

It's Gibson snoring. ...

Chillo update:

Up they go. No leaf drop.

I attacked that holiday to-do list with gusto today. Got some of the painting jobs out of the way and cleaned up the many layers of dirt in my outdoor area. Thinking of hanging up some fairy lights out there for ambience.

Still plenty more to do but feeling accomplished!

[–] StudChud@aussie.zone 9 points 7 months ago

I love the fairy light idea, I'm a huge fan of ambient lights like that.

Because one of my strengths is wasting time, I made a crying tally this year, just for fun. I went to make some graphs to analyse it, but my emotional self decided not to stick to the columns and just dump thoughts and feelings on the spreadsheet. I'm going to make a google form next year.

fun stats

  • I cried 218 times this year, which is an average of once every 1.7 days.
  • Longest crying streak: 17 days
  • Top genres: breakup, relationships with others, uni stress
  • Most cries in a month: 47 (May)
  • Least cries in a month: 2 (December)
  • Favourite cry (CRYme, iykyk): Olivia Rodrigo concert
  • Top feelings: hopelessness, anxiousness
  • Top day to cry: Sunday (this was due to sleep deprivation)

The past two years have been pretty terrible mental health wise, but I think things are starting to pick up. I have a sense of peace that I've wanted for a really long time, and so many awesome things in my life. For the first time in a long time, I don't feel such a huge sense of dread and hopelessness anymore, which is really nice :)

[–] tone212_@aussie.zone 6 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (2 children)

While that is far too much crying for one person, and I hope it happens so little next year that you don’t need to record anymore, these really are fun statistics to have kept.

Bit of a rant:

It appears I created a cardinal sin for dating apps (aside from joining them).

Monday morning I sent a recent match on messenger (and she requested my info) a silly Dad joke and hope you have a good day.

She laughed. Said thanks. Hope you do too.

That night I asked how her day was.

No response.

Alright. Maybe busy or something. Left it at that.

Then Christmas Morning I said Merry Christmas. Hope you have a great day.

No response.

I've not said anything since. Not bothering (though still facebook friends, go figure).

Social conventions confuse me. I figure she's found someone else/better.

But I think 2025 is going to be the year of no apps. Just a focus on my goals. So ladies, you got 4 days to friendzone or ghost me before the chance is gone lol :D

[–] Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone 6 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Never send a message if they haven't responded first.

Edit: Don't waste your time and emotional energy. Go out instead.

[–] SituationCake@aussie.zone 6 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I am thankful I have a long term partner and have never needed to used dating apps. It sounds like a nightmare. Ghosting is such a repulsive move to me. A simple “I’ve not been feeling it will work with us, its been nice chatting and wish you luck in the future’ is all that’s needed? But apparently that’s not the done thing? I think look at it like a filter, someone who doesn’t have the capabiltiy to communicate they don’t want to continue is not going to be someone you can build a good relationship with. Relationships need communication. Shrug and move on.

Sorry peeps, I'm about ready to pass out so I might let someone else handle the thread if nobody minds

I did give Jason a go before bed. He did good. Better than expected. There were a couple of things he didn't pick up that my cheapo from Kmart wouldve

Night!

[–] TheWitchofThornbury@aussie.zone 8 points 7 months ago

No drama Baku. Someone will step up.

[–] Duenan@aussie.zone 8 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Grocery shop done. Took longer than I thought and got caught close to closing time.

Bought a pizza for dinner tonight and will throw it in the oven soon with some extras.

I may have stocked up on too much food I went over my food budget but perhaps that’ll lead to me buying less next time.

Also got some chippies for snacks.

[–] Seagoon_@aussie.zone 6 points 7 months ago (1 children)

yes, you did get some chippies 😊

[–] Duenan@aussie.zone 6 points 7 months ago (1 children)

And now got LOTR Return of the King on tv now.

On the third day of Christmas my true love gave to me

Three French hens

Two turtle doves

And a partridge in a pear tree.

Well, not really. But yay Christmas is over and we’re now in the short blissful period between Xmas and new year where the roads are quiet and weather is good and I can sit in the couch doing nothing for a week.

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 8 points 7 months ago

Built a couple agricultural level bait stations on christmas eve, now there's no less than three distinct nests going ham on the one under the lemon tree, oblivious to their impending doom. I need some killer artwork on that thing, we're calling it The Death Silo

Saw Anora at the cinema. It’s a wild ride, you can see the car crash is coming and keep bracing for impact, not sure when it will finally hit. Many hilarious moments with the Russian/Armenian fix-it men, but overall a very heavy movie. If I may use the hobbit rating system, I give it 4 hobbits. The lead actress will be an Oscar contender for sure, she made the character so very real in every scene.

I'm cooking a big batch of corn & zucchini fritters for the freezer. Two dozen done, about another dozen to go. This is rather slow going in my little press which only makes two at a time.

Edit: finished! Three dozen fritters cooked.

[–] Baku@aussie.zone 6 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I know I've been the silly question king recently, but are fritters kind of like potato rostii?

Cricket is on in the background, it’s not something I normally watch. What is going on with the grating annoying tooting horns? Is this new? How have these people not had beers poured on them and booed out of the stadium yet? I would go crazy seated anywhere near them.

[–] CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone 6 points 7 months ago (7 children)

It's the Indian crowd. They also have drums and cymbals and stuff going. It can get grating but I've heard worse. They all sit together that's why there's no booing or beer pouring on heads. I'd rather a raucous crowd than a quiet please crowd like the tennis.

Jason has been configured. I think. Jason is now sleeping. The instructions say Jason must sleep for at least 4 hours before vacuuming

At about 10:30, Jason is gonna do a lap around the room. Jason is short, but, uhh, a bit wide, so may have some trouble in certain spots but can fit under basically everything

Jason sleeping

I haven't entirely Jason-proofed my room yet. Hell try to eat his charger and the blind thingy if I leave them there. Not 100% sure what I can do about either of those though. Don't really have alternatives

this little wrap-around spider, genus Dolophone, but unsure of specific species

Located on my cousin's tent lol, not very camouflaged. So small and strange shaped, I love it!

[–] TheWitchofThornbury@aussie.zone 6 points 7 months ago (2 children)

Look up 'bird dropping spider' - they are truly awesome! I have them in my garden.

discussing shit on reddit

i have learnt that when i was young and straight out school i thought definitions and laws meant something. I thought de jure was real. ( I think laws are aspirational and indicative of the kind of society we want , so not totally useless )

now i'm old and see it's mostly window dressing, the de facto world is what exists.

Made it back home safe and sound with Glen 20 and a microwave meal (mostly because although I have easy to do meals, I don't have the energy to do something nutritious... Mostly in it for the low quality veg on the side)

I'm still very nauseous though. No clue if it's something I ate, the smell, the lack of sleep, some kind of toxin or gas or something, or just a combination of everything but I do not feel very well at all

Sorry I've been so self centred recently. I'll try and at the very least being some positivity in over the next few days

E: LL messaged to say somebody will be coming on new years eve afternoon

[–] melbaboutown@aussie.zone 6 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (1 children)

It’s fine dude. You’ve just made a huge milestone leap that you will need to settle from - only to be met by a nauseating sensory nightmare.

The heat can’t be helping

You’re dealing with dead animal stench in house! Most everyone would find it repulsive. Hopefully the Glen 20 helps a bit. Perhaps eat dinner in your outdoor area? Might be better for appetite.
