If you find an injured owl:

Note your exact location so the owl can be released back where it came from. Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitation specialist to get correct advice and immediate assistance.

Minimize stress for the owl. If you can catch it, toss a towel or sweater over it and get it in a cardboard box or pet carrier. It should have room to be comfortable but not so much it can panic and injure itself. If you can’t catch it, keep people and animals away until help can come.

Do not give food or water! If you feed them the wrong thing or give them water improperly, you can accidentally kill them. It can also cause problems if they require anesthesia once help arrives, complicating procedures and costing valuable time.

If it is a baby owl, and it looks safe and uninjured, leave it be. Time on the ground is part of their growing up. They can fly to some extent and climb trees. If animals or people are nearby, put it up on a branch so it’s safe. If it’s injured, follow the above advice.

Snowy put all the haters to rest with a win over the Barn Owl. This frosty feathered one has taken on some of the most exciting owls from the equator we could find. It's a personal favorite that drives people to do crazy things to catch a glimpse of them. It's a real celebrity amongst owls. This owl has the energy of a winner and it's looking to out do its second place it got last year.

Many were sad GHO had to make way for the Saw Whet, but Eagle Owl is looking to pick up their endorsement in its stead. They've got a lot of the same characteristics that make them great owls. They're big with classy patterned feathers. Large talons with crushing grip strength to take care of the largest prey, having been known to (rarely) catch foxes or roe deer fawns! A potential upgrade over the GHO is the Eagle Owl has orange eyes instead of yellow.

Which of these jumbo sized owls will you send to the finals? Will we have a rematch between Snowy and the Scops? Will the Eagle Owl put the Snowy on ice? Upvote now to give us our service finalist!

Look at the first picture! This cannot loose!!

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

I wasn't sure if that looked too mean, but I ended up decided it showed supreme confidence.

That second picture reminds me of the “it's hekin' wimdy”-meme, although I'm guessing it's saying “it's hekin' frosty”

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

It does look like that! 😁

The Eagle Owl has more going for it than just a striking color, so while I tend to favor Snowy - and it does have some prominent riktal bristles - I'm going for EO in this one.

Snowy is kind of a blob, when you extract that shocking white.

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Lol they all have the rictal bristles since they all have the same blind spot at their mouth otherwise. It's mainly if they're of contrasting color and how fluffed the owl is that makes them stand out.

And to be fair to Snowy, the blob is functional, it didn't just let itself go after finding a mate. 😜

[–] sxan@midwest.social 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ah, but the bristles are more prominent on some species, ĉu ne? You can also say they all have ears, but the GHO and this EO really have some ears!

I'm liking the complexity of the EO this morning. Some days, I like the sphere, some days I like the abstract art.

Fair enough. They're all the best to me, after all. That's why I make you guys tell me who's the best of the year!

It's really tough choices, this time around. The Saw Whet v Scopes is particularly tortuous; I'd hoped to never have to choose between them.

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

When it's been narrowed down to this few choices, it really cranks the pressure up to choose the right one!

[–] casmael@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Tbh it’s the ears that decided it for me 👂 👂

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I'm all ears when it comes to your votes!

[–] kaida@feddit.org 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The ONE choice where I had a favourite and it lost 😦

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Fear not, I have a whole stack of Snowy pics to share now that it isn't a conflict of interest! Photographers will always be on Snowies likes ants to honey.

How do you sa yin English "combat de regard"? "Eyes fight"? "Glaring contest"?

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I would say "staring contest."

[–] ChaosCoati@midwest.social 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

When it comes to owls I think “glaring contest” could definitely work too

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Staring contest sounds friendly.

Glaring contest sounds like there's stakes.

[–] ChaosCoati@midwest.social 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Haha true. Eagle owl and GHO always seem like high stakes players to me, plus I worked with a grumpy GHO so I’m sure that colors my impression of the species

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

The local park GHO is definitely a sassy lady. She sits there hissing at me the whole time, but she's not going to move...she'll just hiss until I move along. I never see the people feeding her linger any longer than necessary either, so that doesn't win her over either.

While ~~Rush album~~ Snowy Owl is one of my all-time faves, I'mma root and toot for the Eagle Owl this year. *Sousa-like-tunes*

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

There's no wrong choice today.

Sousa seems fitting for the Uhu.

[–] iegod@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Snowy owl is just too sexy. Easy win.

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

No easy wins today, both these races are tight! 😬

[–] onigiri@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

They are both so good! 😭

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I know! Both matches are so intense today, I wonder what the final will be like. 😧

[–] proudblond@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If my beloved GHO can’t win, then Eurasian Eagle should! So majestic… and catlike lol

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

It's a mighty beast, for sure!

[–] pseudo@jlai.lu 1 points 1 year ago

Yes! Yes! Pâparappa pâ pâ blob party 🥳

[–] HaleHirsute 1 points 1 year ago

That Eurasian is all business!
