It really says something about the state of the Russian military that they have to buy up the trash that's too crappy for North Korea's army.

North Korea’s army which, whilst having a stranglehold on available resources in its threadbare economy, hasn’t seen combat since the 1950s. Its actual combat readiness may fall short of its rhetoric.

may

They can't even stop their own guys sprinting off across the DMZ.

[–] Anivia@feddit.org 15 points 10 months ago (1 children)

They have actually made that near impossible since 2020. The amount of successful escapes per year is now less than 10% of before

[–] zbyte64@awful.systems 3 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I'm very curious what the numbers are, care to drop any sources?

[–] i_stole_ur_taco@lemmy.ca 23 points 10 months ago (1 children)

South Korea is going to have a wealth of embarrassing NK military footage from this to use in their cross border propaganda deliveries. That could damage morale inside North Korea in a way that’s never been seen before.

Fingers crossed this dumb decision hurts their regime hard.

[–] NikkiDimes@lemmy.world 21 points 10 months ago

To my knowledge, people close to the borders where propaganda can effectively reach are already quite aware that their government is a joke. They're just stuck there.

Their military is really good at marching in unison!

Russians covered all their wepons in it for storage.

[–] Manifish_Destiny@lemmy.world 13 points 10 months ago (2 children)

My mosin from the 1940s still reeks of it.

[–] Hugin@lemmy.world 8 points 10 months ago

Cosmoline smells more like "gun" to me than gunpowder.

[–] M0oP0o@mander.xyz 6 points 10 months ago

Brake clean is handy for that. (if you don't like the smell)

[–] Carrolade@lemmy.world 55 points 10 months ago (2 children)

I don't actually know what they got in exchange, but I'm guessing the N Koreans got the better end of the deal.

Nuclear technology. Or ICBM assistance.

[–] n3m37h@sh.itjust.works 15 points 10 months ago

Idk if Russia can even help with the latter as 4/5 of their new missiles have failed to launch

[–] Carrolade@lemmy.world 12 points 10 months ago

There's a lot of technological possibilities. Also just things like food imports.

[–] Badeendje@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

Nuclear submarine tech

[–] kerrigan778@lemmy.world 6 points 10 months ago

I would assume access to modern airplanes.

[–] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 45 points 10 months ago (3 children)

I hope a few go off while they are being cleaned.

[–] bradorsomething@ttrpg.network 34 points 10 months ago (1 children)

They don’t even go off in the tubes.

[–] Jumpingspiderman@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)

JFC, that would be such a pain in the ass for them if those dud mortar rounds got stuck in the mortar tubes.

[–] nova_ad_vitum@lemmy.ca 5 points 10 months ago (2 children)

What do you even do in that situation? You have to assume it can go off at any time right ?

[–] Bob_Robertson_IX@lemmy.world 7 points 10 months ago

Ask one of the NK guys to get it out.

[–] mipadaitu@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago

Typically there's a documented hang fire wait time before starting any recovery process.

Though the official process and the actual process is probably pretty different, especially after multiple hang fires.

Eventually they probably just see the dud, flip over the mortar to dump out the dud, throw it as far as possible, then try the next one.

[–] Jumpingspiderman@lemmy.world 9 points 10 months ago

I hope they All go off while being cleaned.

Can someone give me the over-under on this ending hilariously with a large plume, 0 remaining munitions, and a whole bunch of roasted Orc?

[–] tired_n_bored@lemmy.world 15 points 10 months ago

May them blow in your faces

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 13 points 10 months ago

You can really see why they were so desperate to get nukes huh?
