Well, I was originally looking to acquire an FW16 to replace my aging desktop and laptop with a single device.
However, disaster struck early: I accidentally left the window tilted with my laptop close to it during a storm, let’s just say it didn’t stay quite dry. There‘s little I can do on a device with more layers of glue than I have layers in my toilet paper, it’s time for a swift replacement.
This obviously means that the FW16 is out of the question, I can’t live half a year without a working laptop. Neither can I potentially wait 4 months for a FW13 with AMD APUs (which I would prefer). If I still want to go Framework (which I do) I‘m limited to the Intel FW13. Here’s where I got some questions:
- Is the 13th Gen Intel FW generally suitable for a CS student? Can it get me through a day at campus? I usually take notes on my tablet and only use the laptop when needed.
- How about noise mitigation? I don’t think my fellow students are happy about hearing a jet engine running on takeoff thrust during lecture. Can I limited the CPU to, say, 15W when I don’t need the full power to reduce fan noise? How much would performance actually be impacted?
- About the iGPU: I am not concerned with CPU performance, the i5 would be plenty, but how about the iGPU? Is the iGPU in the i5 version sufficient for the everyday student needs? Would it be a downgrade from the R5 4500U in my currently broken laptop? If I need to do some really heavy lifting with a dedicated GPU, I can still resort to my desktop (and perhaps slap in a decent used GPU down the road, 3080s are getting pretty cheap). But I‘d like to be able to do a little bit of everything on Campus.
- How long does it usually take from order to door? I am living in Germany for that matter. About 2-3 weeks is my survival estimate without a laptop, if it takes considerably longer I‘ll sadly have to look into something else.
I‘d greatly appreciate any insights to help me make an informed decision.
