IMPORTANT

Please do not post the "good friend" or similar copypasta

==========

Our galactic citizens have requested more specific rules, so here are a few.

The general idea is, if you're looking here for rules, you're probably someone who doesn't need to have them spelled out. You're fine. But anyway:

  1. This is a community for Star Wars memes. This means typically screenshots of Star Wars media with some text or context that's meant to be funny and/or thoughtful. All SW media is welcome: movies, games, comic books, fanart... Other kinds of content, like video links or meta memes (about this community, or Lemmy), are fine as well, just keep it on topic.

  2. We are all friends here, and love (sometimes love to hate) Star Wars. Be nice to each other.

  3. As fans of fictional media, we can be passionate. If you very strongly disagree with something or someone, take a deep breath before reacting. Anger leads to the dark side!

  4. Everything in Star Wars has happened a long time ago, in a galaxy far away, and it's a rich universe of millions of words and millions of years of history. So current Earthly matters really shouldn't concern us here. In other words, leave politics, philosophies and convictions behind the door. This applies even if it's about something related to Star Wars.

  5. Original content is preferred. Reposts are fine, just please limit to a maximum of 3 per day, per citizen. It is recommended, but not required, to mark original memes as (OC) and reposts as (repost).

  6. Local mods are the Jedi council. They may take actions that are necessary to maintain peace and stability of the Republic, even beyond the rules outlined here. Follow their guidance.

  7. Regular rules of the Lemmy.world instance apply.

You jest, but back then this was an actual debate. For most people it was obvious but some doubted it.

[–] ChronosTriggerWarning@lemmy.world 21 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Wait, so Darth Vader is

spoilerLuke Skywalker's father?

[–] Bougie_Birdie@lemmy.blahaj.zone 13 points 11 months ago (4 children)

In a similar vein

spoilerVader is German for Father, so this wasn't as devastating a reveal in european markets

[–] bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de 28 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Dutch, and it's a coincidence, nothing more.

[–] RamblingPanda@lemmynsfw.com 10 points 11 months ago

You can try to deny it, but we all know the Dutch are the remnants of the empire.

Darth Vader was actually originally a separate character from Anakin, and his name was just "Darth Vader". That's why Obi-Wan addresses him as "Darth", whereas after that it's a title, not a name, as Lucas retconned a bit to have a grand plan.

So when he was named Vader, he wasn't even Luke's father, so...

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 7 points 11 months ago (1 children)

No one working on the first movie was even sure it would do well. Lucas may have had some plans in his mind for a bigger story, but at the time he was trying to get the initial movie made. I don't even know if there's evidence he had a huge franchise planned out with all the plots, but of course he'd claim he did once it took off.

but of course he'd claim he did once it took off.

Yeah.

Reminded me of: George Lucas is a timetraveler and I wrote Star Wars

[–] Thassodar@lemm.ee 3 points 11 months ago

That was great

[–] UpperBroccoli@lemmy.blahaj.zone 14 points 11 months ago

spoiler

German

Very close, alas no cookie. In German, that would be "Vater". However, "Vader" exists with that meaning in Dutch.

[–] Strider@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Source on this pls, never heard of it and am resident.

[–] Bougie_Birdie@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 11 months ago (1 children)

As the other comments will tell you, I'm mistaken on the language

It's just something I heard before the internet. It could be total baloney

[–] Strider@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

OK, thanks!

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 6 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Yup, I remember one guy replied to me once on a forum adamant that Palpatine wasn't going to become the Emperor. It stick in my mind because it was so much "WHAT?" How do you not... WHAT?

[–] bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de 4 points 11 months ago

And then they deny that the Emperor's name in novels and radio plays is canonical.

[–] Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world 57 points 11 months ago (3 children)

That can't be the Emperor because this is the Emperor:

[–] CeruleanRuin@lemmings.world 6 points 11 months ago

That's all just snoke and mirrors.

Edit: I'm leaving that typo because it's funny, and would make for a great Star Wars character name, like Greedo.

[–] stupidcasey@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago (1 children)

So much cooler than a normal dude, change my mind.

[–] confuser@lemmy.zip 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

this is a normal dude, just lots of facial skin humps and strong shadows, the things thst look like protruding eyes arr just eyebrows and eye bags which strong shadows from harsh lighting.

I can't tell if you are joking. It was a woman under heavy makeup with chimp eyes superimposed.

[–] confuser@lemmy.zip 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

idk you posted the picture haha

[–] Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Here's a shot of the actress with different lighting:

[–] confuser@lemmy.zip 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

yep still not a non-human alien like what stupidcasey was suggesting

[–] Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)
[–] confuser@lemmy.zip 1 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (1 children)

i think that is a costume or mask or whatever

[–] Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Are you saying that Chewbacca wasn't an alien? He was just a guy in a fur suit?

[–] confuser@lemmy.zip 1 points 11 months ago
[–] Gork@lemm.ee 14 points 11 months ago

I love Democracy.

[–] beebarfbadger@lemmy.world 12 points 11 months ago

Seems a bit far-fetched.

I mean Palpatine is a well-respected politician. Their kind wouldn't lie. He has said himself that his side are the good guys, what more proof do you want?

[–] Melatonin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 11 months ago

Waiiit. THIS. CHANGES. EVERYTHING.

I will have to go back and rewatch 4, 5, and 6. I thought that was Uncle Owen!

[–] OpenStars@discuss.online 10 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Just wait till they find out who Darth Plagueis is...

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 4 points 11 months ago (1 children)
[–] OpenStars@discuss.online 2 points 11 months ago

Yes the... "wise"... right. :-D

[–] blaue_Fledermaus@mstdn.io 8 points 11 months ago (1 children)

When I first watched RotS I thought that Sidious was only disguised as Palpatine (as in kill-and-replace) and the electrocution had just destroyed the disguise.

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 3 points 11 months ago (1 children)

At what point did you think he was replaced?

I always thought the Clone Wars should've involved people getting replaced by cloned versions of them or something like that. But nope, the clones were just storm troopers. Oh well...

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 4 points 11 months ago

With how wars are named, the Clone Wars should have been the Republic fighting clone armies, not droids.

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 6 points 11 months ago

This is rebel propaganda!

[–] filcuk@lemmy.zip 6 points 11 months ago

It is today I found out what 'the phantom menace' title was referring to

[–] JoShmoe@ani.social 5 points 11 months ago

Darth Sidious and Vadar were played by completely different actors. Your theory has plot holes.

[–] paddirn@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

That could still be JarJar.
