Freetube (combined with Libredirect for ease of use) is what I recommend as a replacement.

You can still self-host Invidious. I'm doing this for 1-2 weeks without any problems. What does not work: Public instances hosted in data centers, because YouTube blocked lots of cloud IPs.

Some people like to do other things than watch 10,000 different shows and movies everyone around us recommends.

People almost never recommend some other activity. Just whatever random thing they enjoyed watching recently. Of course other people aren't always going to keep up. But if you say "thanks but I won't be getting around to it" for some reason humans get butthurt.
