Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

One year on. Hundreds of thousands are dying or dead, millions are displaced, the Middle East is undergoing its greatest changes in a generation, Iran has directly attacked Israel twice in one year, and Yemen has proven that the US Navy ain't worth shit. We are the closest we have been to nuclear war (discounting accidents) in decades, but also the fall of Israel.

Because one day, the prisoners of a concentration camp paraglided over a wall.

Israel-Palestine Conflict

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Sources on the fighting in Palestine against Israel. In general, CW for footage of battles, explosions, dead people, and so on:

UNRWA reports on Israel's destruction and siege of Gaza and the West Bank.

English-language Palestinian Marxist-Leninist twitter account. Alt here.
English-language twitter account that collates news.
Arab-language twitter account with videos and images of fighting.
English-language (with some Arab retweets) Twitter account based in Lebanon. - Telegram is @IbnRiad.
English-language Palestinian Twitter account which reports on news from the Resistance Axis. - Telegram is @EyesOnSouth.
English-language Twitter account in the same group as the previous two. - Telegram here.

English-language PalestineResist telegram channel.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists
Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Pro-Russian Telegram Channels:

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.
https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.
https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.
https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.
https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.
https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.
https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.
https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine Telegram Channels:

Almost every Western media outlet.
https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.
https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

Congress ratified milei's veto on university funding. Yesterday an increasing number of universities and other educative institutions were taken by their students. I expect them to call for emergency assemblies in the following hours or days to discuss long term actions.

It has to start somewhere.

btw death to "israel"

I am writing with some comrades a megathread on Salafi-Wahhabism, to be able to quickly link to people that aren't familiar with it. If anyone wants to help, DM me here or on Matrix

The first few days of COVID lockdowns, when it was only supposed to be for two weeks, is such an interesting time to look back at. No one in the world knew what was going to happen next

[–] FALGSConaut@hexbear.net 6 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

I remember being so goddamn naive and thinking "okay this sounds serious enough to cause quarantines, we'll all take it seriously and actually quarantine for a few weeks easy peasy!"

That almost immediately I shifted to "ok so long as they take it seriously and don't let it get a foothold in America we'll be alright, I am concerned that the lack of healthcare/social safety net there would barriers to a real quarantine and further spread covid"

I was fully doompilled on covid when people started busting out anti-mask and anti-vaccine rhetoric. Then I knew we were truly screwed.

[–] mkultrawide@hexbear.net 5 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

I was leasing a car in the middle of February in 2020, and while filling out paperwork, I was telling the salesman how the current research said COVID had a 10-14 day incubation period before people became symptomatic, and how we (the US) were fucked because there was no way we would do the stuff necessary to actually fight an illness like that, because it would require basically shutting down the whole country. He looked at me like I was crazy lol.

[–] aaaaaaadjsf@hexbear.net 4 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (5 children)

No one in the world knew what was going to happen next.

I don't think that's true, it was fairly obvious to those doing research that COVID was not going to disappear after a half arsed 2 week lockdown, and that the lockdowns were going to have to be extended for quite a while. The virus was spreading at an exponential rate and reaching new countries every day, and some kind of "worldwide lockdown" to eliminate COVID forever was never going to be feasible.

This is going to sound off the wall but I was listening to Michael Moore’s podcast at the time (March 2020) and he had correct predictions. His ivory castle contacts were telling him the real truth that the public officials were obfuscating. He said, according to his sources, we would have wave after wave of lockdowns and openings for at least a year, probably longer.

Will Gaza being completely destroyed and covered in debris which will take decades to clean up mean remaining Palestinians be forced out of there (by blocking construction materials) once this ethnic cleansing campaign ends?

Norm is pessimistic but I don't think he is completely wrong.

I think the long game is to bunker bust every square inch and start settling. Of course, the settlements will just be for "regional security", at least in the beginning.

If that happens, the scum are going to be digging up bodies and teddy bears in their backyards for generations. The land is scarred with genocide

[–] cricbuzz@hexbear.net 3 points 10 months ago

I remember hearing in the beginning of Israel's bombing that Israel's strategy is actually not even to fully demolish a building but rather to partially/mostly destroy it. This is because then Gaza has to pay to fully tear down the building before building it back up. Whereas if they fully demolished it, it'd only be the buildup cost for them.

Truly some of the most evil people that have lived isntrael

Yeah I don’t think Gaza can be “rebuilt” while Israel exists

Fascist leader charged with racist hate speech

Danish fascist leader Morten Messerschmidt has been charged with hate speech due to a racist propaganda graphic that he posted to X, the everything app (formerly Twitter) in reaction to the Al-Aqsa Flood last year.

In 2002 Messerschmidt was given a suspended sentence for publishing the same graphic as delivery leader of a fascist youth organisation. He claims to be surprised about getting in trouble with the law for doing the same thing that got him in trouble with the law before and hints at a "political" conspiracy involving the local chief of police and nebulous actors "higher up" being behind the charges.

The graphic itself has two images next to eachother. The first image is a group of happy white girls subtitled "Denmark today". The next image features two figures with their faces hidden by black baclavas with red headbands. Each figure is holding a Qur'an in his hand. Their clothes are smeared in red paint, which is supposed to look like blood. The second image is subtitled "Denmark in ten years".

For those too slow to get the message, the point is driven home in big alarming red letters under the images: "Mass R*pes - Aggravated Assault - Insecurity - Forced Marriages - Oppression of Women - Gang Crime", and further below "This is what a multiethnic society has to offer us"

The graphic is best described as "Der Stürmer with 1990's small business flyer aesthetics". I have included it below so you can see how fucked the vibes are (I'll be happy to remove it if someone requests it), proceed with caution, it is absolutely horrible in every way imaginable.

CW: Racist dreck

Messerschmidt calls the charges an attack on freeze peach and claims that "today everyone can see that what we have written about immigration politics was true" and he goes on to postulate that he "has yet to meet someone who doesn't agree that immigration from the Middle East has led to more insecurity, oppression of women, terrorism and so on".

Messerschmidt himself and his fascist party are treated as serious and legitimate political actors by news media and all other parties in parliament. The party has had a disproportionately large influence over the construction of Danish state racism.

The Nobels are being awarded and both physics and chemistry prize have gone to AI related breakthroughs.

The Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to two scientists, Geoffrey Hinton and John Hopfield, for their work on machine learning.

Demis Hassabis and John Jumper of DeepMind and computational biologist David Baker share prize for protein structure breakthroughs

The chemistry one was very obvious that it would be eventually awarded for the development of AlphaFold. But the physics one has come as surprise for many, and it is controversial among physicists.

What even is America's interest in keeping Cuba starved? Is it afraid of having a communist country that close?

[–] grandepequeno@hexbear.net 3 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Also, at this point, it's fair to say that America just DOESN'T negotiate anything, they didn't negotiate with Putin to not invade Ukraine even though they knew he was gonna do it, they don't negotiate with China over Taiwan, the don't negotiate with Iran, they don't negotiate with Venezuela. It's an empire of maximalist positions, "do everything we want and we might leave you alone", and this is internally justified with american exceptionalism but the EU is behaving a lot like this too.

[–] someone@hexbear.net 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

America is the child of Britain and France and Germany. The apple didn't fall far from the tree.

[–] grandepequeno@hexbear.net 2 points 10 months ago

Yes but the EU mediated, for example, the ceasefire between Russia and Georgia in 2008, and even admitted that Georgia ignited that conflict by firing on Russian soldiers.

This is unthinkable right now, the EU has adopted the same "we're better than everybody else and our enemies don't have reasons for their grievances" attitude that reinforces its intransigence.

What a nailbiter of a game! Kunlun Red Star came out of the gates strong scoring the first goal in the first period and widening their lead early in the second with another goal! Lokomotiv wasn't deterred, scoring once late in the second and managing to tie it up in the last few minutes of the third! The railwaymen must've built up a good head of steam because they were quick to end it in overtime, scoring almost immediately to bring the final score to 3-2 in Lokomotiv's favor!

Lokomotiv next plays HC Sochi on October 12 at 5pm Moscow Standard Time

YT Live stream coverage of hurricane Milton. Seems to be done by a bunch of weather geeks. Something like 10 active tornado warnings out rn. Stay safe, folks

[–] nohaybanda@hexbear.net 3 points 10 months ago

18 tornado warnings active rn, fuck that's grim. Note: this is not on the coast, but further inland, being caused by the tropic storms ahead of Milton
