Yea as a sober alcoholic and former heavy drug abuser, alcohol withdrawal is by far the worst I’ve ever experienced.
There's a belgian beer named after that. Now that I know what that means, it feels like a pretty morbid kind of humor...
About half of people with alcoholism will develop withdrawal symptoms upon reducing their use. Of these, 3% to 5% develop DTs or have seizures.
Note the fatalitiy rate of DT is 1-4%. Everything about alcoholism makes it seem so much worse than you'd pick up from societal queues

Mortality without treatment is between 15% and 40%.
