I just want a simple 2-bay DAS enclosure for two large-capacity HDDs for a Plex server. I'm only interested in running them as single disks (no raid or anything) and I would rather not spend an arm and a leg.

I've found some but it's a niche market that seems hard to find any reliable reviews or testimonies. Any suggestions? Anything out there that's just got a good record of being reliable?

And as a second question, I've seen here that people strongly recommend USP surge protectors. What's the deal with that? I don't know what they are or what they're for. I gather it helps with sudden power outages, though? If you have a blackout/brownout it will help your device to properly/safely shut down vs. just turning completely off without warning? And I assume that's good because completely shutting off could potentially damage drives? Is that the idea?
