[–] peopleproblems@lemmy.world 7 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I thought doom scrolling was about remaining engaged about terrible news stories

I'm here for memes

It can be, although not necessarily:

Doomscrolling or doomsurfing is the act of spending an excessive amount of time reading large quantities of news, particularly negative news, on the web and social media. Doomscrolling can also be defined as the excessive consumption of short-form videos or social media content for an excessive period of time without stopping.

I’m familiar with the bolded definition. A bunch of little quick hits of dopamine, but nothing to show for it besides boredom.

Tbf I'm not exactly doomscrolling. I'm looking for happy shit and news of comic books and pictures of cats. It's all of the other posters that want to negatively affect my mood, they should stop doomposting howboutdat?

I was right about the show, wrong about the character. I expected a different clip.

It's such a perfect show, so many lines from the show live rent free in my mind, I can't hear someone say "a room" without finishing it off with" WITH A MOOOOOSE!" In my head and giggling like a school kid.

I don't need a device to doomscroll. I can step outside and simply bear witness to the world around me. Wherever I go, the doom is ever present.

One of my goals lately is to only engage with controversial topics a small amount, with high quality comments.

If something is easy to talk about, I go for it. But highly charged topics, I want to say less of higher quality. That means providing data or other primary sources, and it means drafting things and proofreading the comments.

My reason for this is (a) I don’t think it’s healthy to bite off more than I can chew and (b) I don’t think it’s healthy to bite off nothing. My intention is to do what I can, well.
